Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the two-day talks, which are scheduled to take place in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) starting Friday. The meeting comes amid continuing hostilities in Ukraine, with thousands of lives lost since the onset of the war.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Zelenskyy described his recent bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump as positive. He stressed that Ukraine must be assured of “really strong security guarantees” to ensure the protection of its sovereignty and citizens. Zelenskyy highlighted the challenges of negotiating with Russia, acknowledging uncertainty over whether President Vladimir Putin genuinely intends to end the conflict.

Zelenskyy also stated firmly that Russia will not win the war, pointing to the strain on the Russian economy and the severe impacts the conflict has had domestically. He urged the European Union to develop stronger defence capabilities, advocating for a European army of at least three million troops to deter future aggression.

Zelenskyy emphasized the urgency of these talks, saying, “It’s got to get done. Trump said his past attempts to negotiate with Russia were challenging due to disagreements over conditions with Zelenskyy, but he remains focused on facilitating peace. He highlighted the humanitarian aspect of the conflict, noting the thousands of lives lost every week to drone attacks and fighting, and urged swift resolution.

Trump and Zelenskyy’s meetings at Davos also signal continued US involvement in the conflict resolution process. Zelenskyy described the discussions with Trump as “in favour of our country,” reinforcing his commitment to seeking a negotiated settlement while maintaining Ukraine’s security and territorial integrity.
