  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held talks with Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir to urge calm amid ongoing military action between India and Pakistan.

  • Rubio offered US assistance in facilitating dialogue, while President Trump also expressed hopes for a swift de-escalation of the current border crisis.

  • Tensions escalated after India launched 'Operation Sindoor' targeting terror sites in PoK in retaliation for the deadly Pahalgam attack of April 22.

Tensions between India and Pakistan reached new heights this week as both nations engaged in a military standoff following India's cross-border strikes under ‘Operation Sindoor’. The ongoing conflict prompted the United States to intervene diplomatically, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaching out to key figures in both countries to prevent further escalation.

On Friday, Rubio held a critical conversation with Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir, urging both sides to exercise restraint and prioritize dialogue over military aggression. According to a statement issued by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, the Secretary "continued to urge both parties to find ways to de-escalate" and reiterated Washington’s offer to facilitate constructive talks aimed at avoiding future conflict.

This diplomatic effort came amid continued ceasefire violations and drone attacks reportedly launched by Pakistan into Indian territory. According to sources, India retaliated earlier this week with precise airstrikes on nine terror camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). These strikes were carried out in response to the April 22 Pahalgam massacre, where 26 people, primarily tourists, were killed in a coordinated terrorist attack with cross-border links.

The Indian offensive, dubbed ‘Operation Sindoor’, marks one of the most significant military responses since the Balakot airstrikes of 2019. India’s Ministry of Defence reported that the operation successfully neutralized multiple high-value terror launchpads.

US Diplomatic Outreach Intensifies

As hostilities flared, the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump is closely monitoring the situation. In a press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that Trump wants the conflict to de-escalate as quickly as possible. She emphasized the President's longstanding diplomatic ties with both Indian and Pakistani leadership and confirmed that Marco Rubio, now also serving as National Security Advisor, is actively involved in backchannel discussions.

“This is something that the Secretary of State and our national security team are treating with the utmost seriousness,” said Leavitt. “The President believes in open dialogue and regional stability, especially between two nuclear-armed neighbors.”

Rubio’s Calls to Both Nations

Prior to his discussion with General Munir, Rubio had separate phone calls with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. According to sources familiar with the conversations, Rubio urged Pakistan to cease all support for terrorist organizations, while also encouraging India to maintain strategic restraint despite provocations.

However, during the call, Jaishankar was unequivocal, stating that India would respond forcefully to any further escalation or terrorist activity. He conveyed India’s position that its recent actions were defensive and retaliatory in nature and that it had exercised maximum restraint until now.

Fresh Attacks and Defensive Measures

Despite US efforts to dial down the situation, Pakistan launched a fresh wave of drone attacks on Friday night, targeting 26 locations across India, including areas in Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and even as far south as Gujarat. The Indian Air Defence System, supported by new Israeli and indigenous radar technologies, successfully intercepted and neutralized all incoming threats, according to a Ministry of Defence update.

Among the targeted sites were strategic infrastructure facilities like airbases, radar installations, and fuel depots, but no damages or casualties were reported due to the swift countermeasures deployed.

Background: Operation Sindoor and the Pahalgam Massacre

The current escalation was triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where a group of armed militants opened fire on a tourist convoy, killing 26 and injuring dozens. Following a detailed forensic investigation and intelligence analysis, Indian authorities traced the plot back to terror groups operating from PoK, with logistical support allegedly provided by elements within Pakistan’s military establishment.

This led to Operation Sindoor, a swift and targeted military offensive executed on Wednesday morning, involving precision airstrikes and ground-based missile systems. India described the mission as a pre-emptive defensive operation, aimed at neutralizing active launchpads being readied for more attacks.

Global Reactions and Diplomatic Fallout

While Russia and France have remained largely neutral, both the UK and Israel issued statements backing India’s right to defend its citizens. China, on the other hand, expressed concern over the escalation and called for “regional stability” while subtly warning against unilateral actions.

The United Nations, through its spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, appealed to both nations to show restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue. However, Indian officials have reportedly told UN envoys that talks are not possible until Pakistan dismantles its terror infrastructure.

What’s Next?

The situation remains tense as troop mobilization continues on both sides of the border. Indian authorities have placed border villages on high alert, suspended civilian flight operations in several northern sectors, and enhanced surveillance through satellite imaging and drones.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has sought emergency diplomatic assistance from allies in the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Cooperation) and called for a closed-door session at the UN Security Council, though it remains unclear whether such a session will be held.

US Role Going Forward

With the US actively engaging both countries, the Biden-era foreign policy legacy under Trump’s second term appears to be evolving into more direct intervention in South Asian geopolitics. Marco Rubio's dual role as Secretary of State and National Security Advisor gives him significant leverage, and analysts suggest that US shuttle diplomacy may soon be initiated to defuse the crisis further.

Rubio is expected to visit the region next week, with planned stops in New Delhi and Islamabad, possibly even Kabul, given growing concerns over Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan, which might also have spillover effects in South Asia.

As the world watches, the next few days will be critical in determining whether the region heads toward diplomatic resolution or further military confrontation. The US remains a key player, but India's firm posture and Pakistan’s continued provocations suggest a delicate and complex road ahead for peace in the subcontinent.
