What's covered under the article:
- The US, under Donald Trump, shifts policy by siding with Russia on a UN Ukraine resolution.
- India abstains from voting, continuing its neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war.
- France and European nations amend the US resolution to acknowledge Russian aggression.
In a dramatic foreign policy shift, the United States voted against a Europe-backed UN resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, marking a significant break with its traditional European allies. The decision, made under President Donald Trump, signals a growing alignment between Washington and Moscow in global diplomacy.
The UN General Assembly's resolution, which called for Russia's immediate withdrawal from Ukraine, was backed by Ukraine and European nations but faced resistance from the US and Russia. The US abstained from voting on a competing resolution after European countries, led by France, successfully amended it to explicitly hold Russia accountable for the war.
India Abstains from Ukraine Vote
In line with its neutral stance, India abstained from voting on the UN General Assembly draft resolution titled ‘Advancing a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine’. The 193-member assembly voted in favor of the resolution, passing it with a margin of 93-18, while 65 countries abstained, including India.
This voting pattern signals a shift in global support, as previous resolutions condemning Russia’s aggression had received over 140 votes in favor. India’s decision to abstain is consistent with its policy of strategic neutrality, balancing its ties with Russia, the US, and European nations.
UN Security Council & the US Veto Power
Following the General Assembly vote, the US proposed its own draft resolution in the UN Security Council, where its resolutions hold legally binding power. The 15-member Security Council saw 10 nations vote in favor, while five abstained, all from European countries.
The US resolution avoided directly blaming Russia, instead acknowledging the “tragic loss of life” and urging a “swift end to the conflict.” However, this stance clashed with Europe’s position, leading France to propose amendments making it explicit that Russia’s full-scale invasion was the root cause of the war.
France's Amendments & Russia’s Response
France, backed by other European nations, successfully introduced three amendments to the US-backed resolution, ensuring that it:
- Recognizes Russia’s invasion as the cause of the conflict.
- Reaffirms Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
- Demands a peace process that aligns with the UN Charter.
Meanwhile, Russia proposed a counter-amendment calling for an investigation into the “root causes” of the conflict, a move seen as an attempt to shift blame away from Moscow.
Implications of the US Policy Shift
The Trump administration’s decision to align with Russia on the Ukraine war vote represents a major shift from the previous Biden-era policy, which strongly supported Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. This move:
- Strains US-EU relations, as Washington distances itself from European allies on Ukraine.
- Strengthens US-Russia ties, reflecting Trump’s long-standing preference for improved relations with Moscow.
- Raises concerns among NATO members, as US support for collective European security comes under question.
As the Russia-Ukraine war continues into its third year, the shifting dynamics at the UN highlight a changing geopolitical landscape, with the US, India, and European nations taking diverging approaches to the conflict’s resolution.
