US stock futures remained largely flat on Friday after the S&P 500 marked its fourth consecutive day of gains. Market sentiment stayed positive due to optimism surrounding the US-China trade deal and evidence of easing inflationary pressures, both factors supporting investor confidence.
On Thursday, the S&P 500 rose by 0.41% while the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.65%. The Nasdaq Composite, however, declined by 0.18%, weighed down by weakness in the technology sector where profit-taking was observed. Among the 11 S&P 500 sectors, eight closed higher, with utilities, consumer staples, and real estate leading gains. The tech sector faced pressure as investors booked profits.
Economic data released showed a surprising 0.5% decline in wholesale prices for April, defying expectations for a 0.2% increase. This data further contributed to easing concerns over inflation.
In corporate news, UnitedHealth Group (UNH) shares plunged 11% after news of a federal criminal investigation emerged, which weighed on the broader healthcare sector. Walmart (WMT) shares fell 0.5% following a warning that tariffs might force price increases, despite reporting stronger-than-expected sales. Conversely, General Electric (GE) shares rose 2.8% after Qatar announced it will exclusively use GE engines for Boeing’s largest wide-body aircraft order, providing a significant boost to the company.
