In a significant legal development, the US Supreme Court has rejected Tahawwur Rana’s emergency stay application regarding his extradition to India. Rana, one of the accused in the infamous 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, had filed the application in a bid to prevent his extradition, arguing that his health would not allow him to survive the trial process in India.
Rana, who is a known associate of David Coleman Headley, one of the prime conspirators behind the Mumbai attacks, had presented a rather emotional plea to the court, stating that if the stay were not granted, he would soon face death. In his application, he cited various reasons for his supposed vulnerability, including his Pakistani origin, Muslim religion, and his background as a former member of the Pakistani Army. According to Rana, these factors would make him especially susceptible to torture if extradited to India, and he claimed this could result in his death.
However, despite Rana's plea, the US Supreme Court ruled in favor of proceeding with the extradition. This decision clears the way for Tahawwur Rana to face legal proceedings in India concerning his involvement in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 166 people and left hundreds injured.
Rana had been arrested in Chicago in 2009 and was later convicted of providing support to David Coleman Headley in planning the attacks. While Headley himself was sentenced to life in the United States, Rana has long faced extradition requests from India, where he is expected to stand trial for his role in the deadly attacks. The ruling comes after US President Donald Trump confirmed during the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the United States that Rana’s extradition would proceed, further cementing the close cooperation between the two nations on terrorism-related matters.
This ruling is seen as a victory for the Indian justice system, as it brings Tahawwur Rana one step closer to facing Indian laws and being held accountable for his involvement in one of the most devastating terrorist attacks in the country's history.
