The United States government has announced an immediate suspension of worker visas for foreign truck drivers following a deadly truck accident in Florida involving Indian national Harjinder Singh. The crash, which killed three people, prompted US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to take action, citing the rising dangers of foreign drivers operating large tractor-trailer trucks on American highways and its impact on domestic truckers’ livelihoods.
The incident occurred when Singh allegedly took an illegal U-turn while driving a truck on a Florida highway, leading to a fatal collision. Authorities confirmed that Singh was arrested for reckless driving with disregard for human life. Investigations revealed that Singh entered the US illegally in 2018 and managed to obtain a commercial driver’s license in California despite failing the mandatory English language proficiency test required for truck drivers. Singh correctly answered only 2 out of 12 questions on the test and could identify just 1 out of 4 highway signs, raising concerns about his readiness to operate a commercial vehicle safely.
The Florida Highway Patrol (FLHSMV) expressed deep concern over the accident, stating, “The actions taken by the Defendant while operating a commercial tractor-trailer are both shocking and criminal. Three people lost their lives due to his recklessness, and countless friends and family members will experience the pain of their loss forever. Harjinder Singh is in custody on state vehicular homicide charges and immigration violations. He will be deported following the conclusion of state charges.”
The suspension of foreign truck driver visas reflects the US government’s commitment to ensuring road safety and preventing unqualified drivers from endangering lives. This decision has come amid growing scrutiny over the increasing presence of foreign commercial drivers on US roads, and the policy is intended to protect both American citizens and professional truckers.
This incident underscores the critical role of English proficiency and knowledge of highway regulations for safe commercial driving in the US. The Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) mandate that all commercial drivers pass tests covering basic English comprehension and road sign recognition. Singh’s failure to meet these standards highlights the risks posed by unqualified drivers on US highways.
As the case develops, the suspension serves as a wake-up call for authorities, commercial trucking companies, and foreign applicants, emphasizing the need for strict compliance with licensing and safety regulations. The Florida accident has not only claimed lives but also brought international attention to driver licensing standards, visa regulations, and enforcement of road safety measures in the US.
