Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that US and Ukrainian officials will hold critical peace talks in Saudi Arabia next week, aiming to end the ongoing war. In an address on Thursday, Zelenskyy revealed that he would personally travel to Saudi Arabia on Monday to meet with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, while his team would remain to engage in discussions with US representatives.
Zelenskyy’s Push for Peace
“I am scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia to meet with the Crown Prince. After that, my team will stay in Saudi Arabia to work with American partners. Ukraine is most interested in peace,” Zelenskyy stated.
This announcement follows a heated exchange between Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump, which had previously stalled the Ukraine peace process. However, Zelenskyy has since attempted to smooth tensions, expressing his willingness to work under Trump’s leadership.
Ukraine Seeks US Support Amid Military Aid Pause
Amid growing concerns over US military aid, Zelenskyy reassured that Ukraine is prepared to negotiate. His comments came just hours after the White House announced a temporary suspension of military assistance.
In an apparent effort to placate Trump, Zelenskyy praised his leadership, emphasizing that Ukraine is ready for negotiations. “None of us want an endless war. Ukraine is prepared to sit at the negotiating table to bring lasting peace closer,” he stated.
Additionally, Ukraine is in talks with the US regarding a rare-earth minerals and security deal, which could further strengthen bilateral relations.
Uncertainty Over US-Ukraine Relations
Ukraine has heavily relied on foreign aid to defend against Russia’s full-scale invasion, which began on February 24, 2022. However, with Trump back in office, Kyiv fears that Washington’s support may dwindle.
The upcoming talks in Saudi Arabia will be a pivotal moment in determining whether the US will continue to back Ukraine’s defense efforts or push for a swift negotiated settlement with Russia. The world will be closely watching as these high-stakes negotiations unfold.
