  • US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held separate talks with India and Pakistan leaders, urging cooperation after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack killed 26.

  • India suspended Indus Waters Treaty, shut Attari border and airspace; Pakistan responded by suspending Simla Agreement and closing its own airspace.

  • Ceasefire violations intensify along LoC; India gives armed forces full operational freedom amid rising Indo-Pak tensions and blocked Pakistani content online.

In the wake of a devastating terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, primarily tourists, tensions between India and Pakistan have rapidly escalated. The attack occurred on April 22 in the Baisaran valley, leading to a diplomatic flurry and heightened security measures on both sides of the border.

In response, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reached out to key leaders in the region. He held separate conversations with India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, appealing for restraint and cooperation. Rubio emphasized the need to de-escalate tensions and jointly work toward maintaining peace and security in the region.

During his discussion with PM Sharif, Rubio pressed the need to publicly condemn the Pahalgam terror attack, reinforcing that any form of terrorism must be acknowledged and addressed seriously. He also encouraged Pakistan to assist India in the investigation. The US reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism alongside India, highlighting its long-standing strategic partnership.

In his conversation with Minister S Jaishankar, Rubio conveyed condolences for the lives lost and expressed his concerns over growing hostilities. Both India and Pakistan, Rubio stated, must "move forward in a manner that avoids further escalation," while still holding terrorists accountable for their actions.

Rising Tensions and Retaliatory Moves

The Pahalgam terror strike has triggered a cascade of punitive measures between the two nations:

  • India suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, a significant diplomatic step that has historically governed water sharing between the two countries.

  • The Attari-Wagah border was shut by India, halting cross-border movement.

  • In retaliation, Pakistan closed its airspace to Indian flights and suspended the Simla Agreement, the foundational accord that outlines peaceful resolution of conflicts between the nations.

These actions mark some of the most serious bilateral escalations in recent years.

Additionally, India banned Instagram accounts of Pakistani celebrities such as Hania Amir, Mahira Khan, and Ali Zafar, accusing them of spreading misinformation. Over 15 Pakistani YouTube channels were also blocked as part of a broader crackdown on content perceived as hostile or misleading.

Military Alert and Border Clashes

On the Line of Control (LoC), the situation continues to deteriorate. Pakistani forces have reportedly violated the ceasefire for seven consecutive nights in regions such as Uri and Kupwara, prompting retaliatory action from the Indian Army.

In response to the increased aggression, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a high-level meeting with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. During this meeting, PM Modi stressed that the Indian armed forces have “complete operational freedom” to determine their course of action—including target selection and timing of responses.

The situation remains volatile as both nations continue to prepare for potential military and diplomatic escalations.

International and Regional Implications

This episode has once again spotlighted the fragility of peace in South Asia. Rubio's outreach suggests the United States is closely monitoring the developments and is keen to prevent another full-blown Indo-Pak conflict, especially with global focus shifting toward counter-terrorism efforts and regional stability.

India has also taken its case to international platforms, briefing non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) about the Pahalgam attack, seeking global condemnation and support.

Meanwhile, tensions may continue to rise unless meaningful diplomatic engagement occurs between New Delhi and Islamabad. The recurrent violations of ceasefire agreements, diplomatic rebukes, and cyber restrictions show no sign of slowing.

The coming weeks are likely to be critical in determining whether peace can be restored or if both countries spiral further into hostility. The international community, particularly the United States, is expected to play a mediating role to curb the risk of a larger conflict in the subcontinent.
