  • Economist Jeffrey Sachs warns US will attempt to undercut India once it becomes truly powerful following its past behaviour with Russia and China

  • Sachs says India should avoid becoming a pawn in Americas rivalry with China and pursue strategic autonomy instead of alignment

  • He cautions India against over-reliance on US-led alliances like Quad suggesting friendship with the US can be dangerous when no longer convenient

Top US economist Jeffrey Sachs has warned that the United States will try to weaken India once it becomes successful, just as it has done with Russia and China. He made this claim in a recent interview with Tucker Carlson, where both agreed that America’s global strategy is not driven by ideology but by a desire to maintain hegemonic control.

Sachs stated that whenever a nation becomes large enough to challenge the dominance of the United States, it triggers an effort from Washington to contain or undermine that country. According to him, this is why America has opposed Russia and continues to push back against China.

He believes India will face the same treatment if it continues its economic and strategic rise. Sachs previously predicted that India could surpass the United States to become the second-largest economy in the world within the next 10 to 15 years, and possibly even claim the top position later this century.

While praising India’s economic development, Sachs cautioned the country against being drawn into the United States’ geopolitical game against China. He said the US wants to use India as a counterbalance to China but doing so would compromise India's strategic autonomy.

Sachs was especially critical of India's involvement in the Quad alliance which also includes the United States, Japan and Australia. He argued that the Quad mainly serves American interests and warned that India should not risk long-term sovereignty by aligning too closely with US-led coalitions.

He advised India to follow a balanced diplomatic approach, engaging with all major powers including Russia and China rather than being pulled into strategic entanglements led by Western nations. Sachs said India is too big and too important to be used as a tool in any superpower rivalry.

Drawing from America's history with allies, Sachs warned that friendship with the US can be risky, as the United States has a record of abandoning its partners once their utility is exhausted. He emphasised that the US treats international relations based on its interests and not loyalty.

Sachs clarified that America’s opposition to Russia and China is not about ideology or democracy but about economic size and military capability. Any country that grows strong enough to challenge American supremacy will eventually face opposition from Washington.

Sachs stressed that India should stay focused on its own national interest, rather than being influenced by any one bloc or alliance. He stated that strategic independence is India’s most valuable asset in a world that is increasingly multipolar and volatile.

He added that India has a chance to lead by example and set a path of non-alignment and balance, engaging with all global powers without becoming dependent on any. According to him, such an approach will protect India's sovereignty, stability and growth potential in the long term.

His remarks come at a time when India’s international stature is growing, both economically and diplomatically. With increasing involvement in global trade, security partnerships and multilateral forums, India is positioning itself as a central player in shaping the future world order.

However, Sachs's comments act as a strong caution to Indian policymakers, advising them to carefully assess every strategic partnership and avoid being drawn into rivalries that do not serve India's core interests.

In conclusion, Sachs believes that India must remain confident in its rise but avoid the trap of becoming a secondary actor in someone else's global strategy. He advocates for a future where India grows on its own terms, with full control over its foreign policy, economic choices and national visin
