The Second Lady of the United States described the India trip as life changing for her children and hinted at a return to explore South India
Usha Vance, Second Lady of the United States and wife of Senator JD Vance, has opened up about her family’s recent visit to India, sharing touching personal moments from their time with Prime Minister Narendra Modi that left a lasting impression on her three young children
Speaking at the US India Strategic Partnership Forum held in Washington DC, Usha Vance, a successful lawyer of Indian origin, recalled how the trip served as both a diplomatic engagement and a deeply personal homecoming Her children — Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel — were visiting India for the first time and their encounter with PM Modi turned into one of the most memorable highlights of their lives
Mangoes and memories at the Prime Minister’s residence
“One of the most unforgettable parts of the trip,” Vance said, “was when we were at the Prime Minister’s residence and our son saw an entire cart full of mangoes” The young boy was so delighted by the offering that he told the Prime Minister he could happily live there
This humorous and heartfelt moment drew laughter from the audience, as Vance explained how her children, despite having travelled widely, found something uniquely special in India “They talk about it all the time It really meant something to them,” she said
A warm bond beyond politics
Describing the atmosphere of the meeting, Vance said that while the official conversation between JD Vance and Prime Minister Modi was productive, it was also a time when their personal relationship was truly cemented
“Modi ji was very generous and kind with the kids,” she recalled, adding that the meeting was not just about diplomacy, but also about creating real emotional connections Her children were quick to embrace the Prime Minister, with one even hugging him like a grandfather figure
“They saw an Indian man with a white beard and white hair and just put him in the grandfather category immediately” Vance said with a smile “He gave our five year old a birthday present that day — it was just the sweetest thing”
Puppet shows and cultural heritage
Among the many memorable cultural experiences the family enjoyed, a traditional puppet show stood out for the children The show featured acts from across India, including bits from the Ramayana and regional puppeteering from Andhra Pradesh, where Vance’s family originates
“The puppet show was a particular highlight,” she said “It had comedy with animals and my kids loved it so much they’ve been trying to recreate it at home using construction paper”
These immersive experiences helped her children connect with their Indian roots in a tangible way “They’ve grown up hearing about India from grandparents and through food and stories but had never actually seen it with their own eyes,” she added
A trip to remember and a promise to return
Usha Vance called the India trip the trip of a lifetime for her family “It could not have been more special for JD and me,” she said “We had the opportunity to see some of the greatest sites in North India”
However the journey is far from over The Second Lady expressed a desire to return to India soon, particularly to explore the southern regions where her family comes from “We’re looking forward to our next trip, especially to the parts of the country where my family is from,” she concluded
A symbolic moment for US India ties
This warm and personal account highlights not just a family’s emotional connection to their heritage but also reflects the deepening cultural and diplomatic ties between India and the United States The Vance family’s memorable experience with Prime Minister Modi adds a human touch to what is often viewed purely through the lens of geopolitics
As India continues to engage with the Indian diaspora abroad, such visits create bridges between generations, bringing stories and traditions to life for those born far from their ancestral roots
