In a tragic incident in Uttarakhand, a couple lost their lives due to carbon monoxide poisoning after they fell asleep with a fireplace burning in their room. The incident occurred on the night of Thursday, January 17, 2025, in the remote village of Dwari-Thapla in the Bhilangana area.

The Tragic Incident

According to reports, the couple lit a fireplace around 11:00 pm to keep warm during the cold weather and moved it inside their room. They closed the door and fell asleep, unaware of the danger that was lurking. The carbon monoxide gas, produced by the smoke from the fireplace, filled the room overnight, leading to their suffocation. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a deadly hazard when indoor fireplaces are used without proper ventilation.

Discovery of the Tragedy

On the morning of Friday, January 18, 2025, the couple’s son went to wake them up but received no response. After trying for a while and unable to open the door, the worried son alerted the locals. The villagers broke down the door and found the couple lifeless, lying on the bed. They were presumed to have died from suffocation caused by the toxic gas in the enclosed space.

Lack of Police Involvement

Interestingly, the locals did not inform the police about the incident. Instead, after speaking with the couple's son and daughter, the villagers proceeded with the cremation of the bodies at a local Ghat. The lack of police involvement raises questions about the protocol for such incidents in rural areas, as well as the safety awareness regarding carbon monoxide poisoning.

Victim’s Background

The deceased couple had been living in the village for some time, with Semwal, the husband, serving as a clerk at the Government Inter College, Saraswatisain. This incident has left the family and the village community in deep sorrow.

Important Reminder on Fireplace Safety

This tragedy underscores the importance of fireplace safety in rural areas, particularly during the cold months. People should ensure proper ventilation when using indoor heaters or fireplaces to avoid carbon monoxide build-up, a silent and deadly gas that can easily lead to suffocation.

Conclusion

The loss of life in Dwari-Thapla village serves as a somber reminder of the hidden dangers posed by improper use of heating appliances in confined spaces. As winter temperatures drop, it is essential for families in colder regions to be mindful of safety precautions to prevent similar accidents. Local authorities must also raise awareness about fireplace safety and the potential hazards of carbon monoxide poisoning to prevent further tragedies in rural areas.
