Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has launched a major crackdown on illegal madrasas, ordering the sealing of more than 50 unregistered madrasas across the state in just 15 days. The move comes as part of his administration's efforts to regulate and ensure that all religious institutions operating within the state follow the law.
Crackdown Details
On March 9, authorities sealed 12 madrasas in Vikasnagar and 9 madrasas in Khatima, continuing the series of actions that began earlier in the month. These madrasas were found to be unregistered and operating without authorization. Earlier, 31 madrasas had already been sealed across various districts.
This action follows a series of intelligence reports and verification drives, revealing a growing number of unauthorized madrasas in areas like Pashchimi Doon and other sensitive regions. These institutions were allegedly being used to not only provide unregulated religious education but also to potentially disturb the state's demographic balance.
CM Dhami's Statement
In response to the escalating issue, CM Dhami has been firm, emphasizing that the state will not tolerate any unlawful activities under the guise of religious freedom. He issued a stern warning, saying, "No one will be allowed to tamper with Uttarakhand’s cultural and legal framework. Anyone found violating the law will face strict action."
The crackdown is viewed as a crucial step in maintaining law and order and protecting the state's integrity from unauthorized operations, which could undermine its established framework.
BSP's Criticism
The state's actions have, however, sparked a political controversy. BSP Chief Mayawati criticized the move, claiming that the government's actions were biased and would hurt religious sentiments. She called for the government to refrain from such "non-secular" moves. Mayawati's remarks came after the Dehradun district administration sealed 15 madrasas on March 7, as part of the ongoing operation.
Future Plans and Expectations
As the state government continues its crackdown, CM Dhami's administration is expected to focus on identifying and addressing any further illegal madrasas or institutions that are operating outside the law. This action aims to reinforce Uttarakhand's legal and cultural integrity, sending a message that unlawful activities will not be tolerated in the state.
The crackdown is also seen as a critical measure to ensure that the state’s religious institutions remain compliant with national laws while protecting the state's cultural fabric.
