  1. A bridge collapsed in Vadodara causing four vehicles to plunge into the river, with nine people feared dead.

  2. Rescue teams recovered five persons alive from the river while others remain missing amid ongoing operations.

  3. Officials are probing the cause of the collapse and ensuring safety measures to prevent future accidents.

A tragic incident occurred in Vadodara, Gujarat late Monday night when a bridge collapsed suddenly, causing four vehicles to plunge into the river below. The disaster has claimed at least nine lives, according to initial estimates by local authorities, and has prompted large-scale rescue and recovery operations that are still ongoing.

The bridge, reportedly built more than two decades ago, was being used for daily commutes by hundreds of vehicles and pedestrians alike. Around 10:45 PM, without any prior warning, a section of the bridge gave way, sending two cars and two two-wheelers directly into the river. Locals nearby reported hearing a loud crash followed by screams and splashing sounds.

Immediate Rescue Efforts

Local residents, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), immediately launched rescue operations. Divers were deployed into the river to search for survivors and retrieve the sunken vehicles. According to a statement by district collector Anil Parmar, five individuals were rescued alive and shifted to a nearby hospital, where two are reported to be in critical condition.

The rescue teams worked overnight, aided by cranes, ropes, and underwater search equipment. By morning, three bodies had been recovered, and the search was intensified for the remaining missing persons. Officials believe that at least nine persons may have died, including a child and two elderly individuals.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Grim Picture

Several eyewitnesses recounted the chaos that ensued after the collapse. Ramesh Patel, a shopkeeper near the bridge, said, “I heard a loud cracking noise and rushed outside. Within seconds, the bridge collapsed and we saw vehicles sinking. People were screaming for help. It was like watching a nightmare unfold in real life.”

Another local, Priya Sharma, said that she had crossed the bridge just minutes before the incident. “It could have been me. The bridge always had minor issues, but no one thought it could collapse so suddenly,” she added.

Condition and Age of the Bridge in Focus

Authorities have confirmed that the bridge was constructed over 22 years ago, and was due for a structural audit later this year. Locals, however, allege that repeated complaints about the bridge’s condition had gone unanswered by the civic authorities.

A senior official from the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) said that the bridge had passed a routine inspection last year, and there were no immediate red flags reported. However, following the collapse, experts from the Gujarat Roads and Buildings Department and independent structural engineers have been called in to inspect the site and determine the exact cause of failure.

Preliminary reports suggest that corrosion of support pillars, combined with heavy rainfall in the past week, may have contributed to the weakening of the structure. Officials are also investigating whether overloading or poor-quality maintenance over the years played a role.

Political Reactions and Government Response

The incident has triggered widespread outrage across the state, with opposition parties blaming the ruling administration for negligence and lack of timely maintenance. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expressed deep grief and assured that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.

In a press briefing, CM Patel stated, “We are monitoring the situation closely. Compensation of ₹5 lakh will be given to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 to those injured. A high-level probe has been ordered, and action will be taken as per its findings.”

Meanwhile, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has asked for a report on the incident and may send a team to assist in technical investigations.

Human Cost and Aftermath

This tragic incident adds to the growing list of infrastructure-related accidents in India, raising concerns about structural safety standards, especially in older bridges. The family of one of the deceased, 32-year-old Anand Desai, who was returning home from work, expressed their heartbreak: “He had messaged us that he would reach in 10 minutes. The next thing we knew, he was in the river. We’re devastated.”

Schools in the vicinity remained shut for the day as a precaution. The collapsed area has been cordoned off, and traffic has been diverted to alternate routes. Heavy machinery is still being used to remove debris and recover the last vehicle believed to be submerged.

National Attention and Media Coverage

The incident has drawn national media coverage, and videos of the collapsed structure and rescue operations are widely circulating on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and WhatsApp. Hashtags like #VadodaraBridgeCollapse and #GujaratTragedy are trending, with citizens demanding better accountability and infrastructure reforms.

Several NGOs and volunteers have joined hands with rescue teams to provide water, food, and first-aid to affected families and survivors.

Need for Infrastructure Reform

India has witnessed multiple bridge collapses in the past decade, most notably in Morbi (Gujarat) in 2022, which resulted in over 140 deaths. Experts believe that the lack of proactive maintenance, absence of real-time monitoring systems, and bureaucratic red tape contribute significantly to such disasters.

Civil engineers and urban planners are now urging governments to adopt smart bridge management systems, including the use of AI-based monitoring, sensor-based alerts, and drone inspections to detect early signs of wear and tear.

A professor from IIT Gandhinagar commented, “Bridges are not meant to last forever. They require continuous evaluation and upkeep. What happened in Vadodara is the result of decades of neglect and underinvestment in infrastructure health.”

Conclusion

As search operations continue and authorities work to bring closure to affected families, this tragic event serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to overhaul India’s infrastructure monitoring systems. While investigations will determine the precise causes, the public demands not just answers, but actions—so that such catastrophes are not repeated.
