On November 27, 2024, fresh protests erupted at the Katra base camp in Jammu and Kashmir’s Reasi district against the proposed Vaishno Devi ropeway project, resulting in the detention of two protest leaders. Bhupinder Singh and Sohan Chand, both representatives of the local labourers and shopkeepers, were taken into police custody after clashes between the protestors and law enforcement. This followed violent protests on November 25, which saw a police officer injured in the confrontation.

Details of the Protest and Police Response

The protest was organized by Bhupinder Singh and Sohan Chand in opposition to the construction of a ropeway along the trek to the Vaishno Devi shrine. As the protestors attempted to rally, the police blocked their path, leading to a violent clash. The authorities confirmed that an FIR was registered on November 26 after the protestors allegedly blocked roads, obstructing the free movement of vehicles and hindering the progress of yatris (pilgrims) visiting the shrine. During the protests, the demonstrators reportedly used bricks, stones, and weapons to assault the police officers and damaged vehicles at Fountain Chowk.

According to the FIR, protestors, led by Singh, Chand, and others, assaulted the police team with fists and blows and tried to harm them with bricks and stones. In addition, they allegedly tore the uniforms of officers and engaged in stone-pelting, putting the public and pilgrims at risk. The protest was eventually dispersed by the police, and the two detained leaders were taken away in a police vehicle.

The District Administration has assured the protestors that discussions with the Shrine Board and other stakeholders would take place to address their concerns over the ropeway project.

The proposed ropeway project at Tarakote in Katra is part of the Vaishno Devi Shrine Board's plan to improve facilities for pilgrims. However, the project has faced strong opposition from local groups, particularly labourers and shopkeepers, who fear it will impact their livelihoods.
