The Vande Bharat Express was attacked by stone pelters in Himachal Pradesh, damaging at least four coaches.
Previous incidents involving stone pelting on Vande Bharat trains have raised serious safety concerns across the railway network.
Authorities are investigating these incidents to improve security measures and protect passengers from future attacks.
In a troubling incident on Saturday, the Vande Bharat Express, which was traveling from Amb-Andaura station to New Delhi, became a target for stone pelters in Himachal Pradesh's Una district. According to officials, at least four coaches of the train were damaged when unidentified individuals hurled stones at the train near Basal village around 1:15 PM. Fortunately, no passengers were injured during this unsettling episode.
Railway police officials are currently assessing the extent of the damage to the train and are undertaking all necessary measures to identify and apprehend the culprits responsible for this act of vandalism. Such attacks not only damage railway property but also create an atmosphere of fear among travelers, raising serious concerns regarding safety and security on the railway network.
This incident is not isolated. Just a few days prior, on October 4, another Vande Bharat Express traveling from Patna to Tatanagar was targeted by stone pelters in Jharkhand. This attack occurred between the Sarmataar and Yaduudhih stations, roughly 4 kilometers from Koderma, resulting in broken windows in Coaches C-2 and C-5. Thankfully, no passengers were harmed in that incident either, but it has sparked alarm over the safety protocols in place for these modern trains.
Earlier in the week, on October 2, a similar act of vandalism occurred in Uttar Pradesh when stones were thrown at the Varanasi-Delhi Vande Bharat Express upon its arrival at Kanpur station. The string of stone pelting incidents has prompted railway authorities to take a closer look at security measures to safeguard the interests of passengers and crew members.
The Vande Bharat Express is a high-performance electric multiple-unit train, manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. It is known for its speed and comfort, making it a lucrative venture for Indian Railways with a remarkable occupancy rate of 130%. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019, these semi-high-speed trains have unfortunately become targets for vandalism in various regions across India.
The rising trend of stone pelting reflects deeper issues related to public order and highlights the need for community engagement to address the underlying causes of such disruptive behavior. Authorities have been urged to enhance security measures and monitor railway tracks more closely to deter potential offenders and ensure the safety of travelers.
In light of these incidents, railway authorities are reassessing security protocols to mitigate risks and enhance passenger safety. Vigilance and community support will be critical in addressing the challenges posed by such acts of vandalism and maintaining the integrity of India’s railway network.
