Indian Railways is set to revolutionize long-distance travel with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set, a high-speed, world-class sleeper train designed for enhanced passenger comfort and safety. After successfully completing rigorous trials, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is poised to transform travel experiences across India.
The first 16-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set completed its trial phase on January 15, 2025, covering a 540-kilometre stretch between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. This milestone comes after the manufacturing of the train at Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai was completed on December 17, 2024. Following the initial trials in early January, the train reached a top speed of 180 km/h during short-distance tests conducted over three consecutive days in the Kota division.
The next steps for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train involve receiving the final certification from the Research Designs & Standards Organisation (RDSO) and approval from the Commissioner of Railway Safety. Once cleared, it will be ready for commercial operation. According to the Railway Board, the final certification process will assess the trial results, and the safety commissioner will evaluate the train’s maximum speed capabilities.
Scaling Up Production for Wider Reach
After the successful trial of the prototype, Indian Railways is set to scale up production. The goal is to roll out nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets between April and December 2025. These sets will provide exceptional efficiency and comfort for long-haul travel, setting new standards in the industry.
To support this expansion, Indian Railways has placed a significant order for propulsion electrics for 50 rakes of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets. The order was awarded to two leading manufacturers:
- M/s Medha will supply propulsion systems for 33 rakes.
- M/s Alstom will supply systems for 17 rakes.
This expansion is part of a broader strategy to enhance self-reliance in railway technology with full-scale production of the 24-car Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains slated to commence by 2026-27.
A New Era of Speed, Luxury, and Comfort
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train represents a new era in rail travel. Designed with cutting-edge technology and features like automatic doors, ultra-comfortable berths, onboard WiFi, and an aircraft-like design, it promises a smooth, quiet, and comfortable journey.
Passengers can now experience world-class sleeping berths and reclining seats in the existing fleet of 136 Vande Bharat trains running on medium and short distances across India. The introduction of the sleeper version is set to elevate the experience for long-distance travelers. The trains are also equipped with advanced safety features, including crash buffers, deformation tubes, and fire barrier walls, ensuring a safer journey for all passengers.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train features three classes: AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier, with a total capacity of 1,128 passengers. This variety of classes offers options for different budgets and preferences, allowing a wider range of passengers to enjoy the enhanced travel experience.
Indian Railways' Vision for the Future
As Indian Railways moves forward with the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train project, it underscores the nation’s commitment to transforming rail travel through innovation and engineering excellence. With trains manufactured under the Make in India initiative, the Vande Bharat Sleeper is not just a technological marvel, but a symbol of India’s growing capabilities in railway technology.
This groundbreaking project promises to be a game-changer for the Indian rail network, providing travelers with a faster, more comfortable, and reliable mode of transport. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Train is more than just a new addition to the fleet—it represents a future of efficient, high-speed rail travel that will shape India’s infrastructure for years to come.
