After its success in Madhya Pradesh, Vicky Kaushal’s ‘Chhaava’, a film based on the life and sacrifices of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, has now been declared tax-free in Goa. The announcement was made by Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on February 19, 2025, coinciding with the 395th birth anniversary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
Goa’s Tax-Free Announcement for 'Chhaava'
Chief Minister Sawant took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his happiness, stating that the film would be tax-free in Goa, recognizing its portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj’s courage and sacrifices against the Mughals and the Portuguese for the causes of Dev, Desh, and Dharma. The film’s tax-free status in Goa will make it more accessible to the public, especially the youth, and those interested in learning about India’s rich historical legacy.
Madhya Pradesh Leads with Tax-Free Declaration
Earlier, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav declared the film tax-free in the state. ‘Chhaava’, which was made with a focus on Sambhaji Maharaj’s life, received positive public reception. Yadav’s decision to grant the tax exemption in Madhya Pradesh was part of a larger effort to support films that preserve the historical legacy of India.
Maharashtra CM’s Support
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also praised the film, describing it as a well-presented historical depiction. Fadnavis mentioned that although he had not yet viewed the film, the feedback he had received highlighted the authentic portrayal of history without any distortion. The Maharashtra government had previously removed entertainment tax in 2017, and Fadnavis hinted at making the film more accessible to the public through further support.
Box Office Success and Growing Popularity
‘Chhaava’ has already become a blockbuster, surpassing the 100 crore mark within just three days of its release. The film is rapidly approaching the Rs. 200 crore milestone, with the latest box office figures at Rs. 197.75 crore. Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film features Vicky Kaushal in the lead role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, and boasts performances by Rashmika Mandanna, Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty, Divya Dutta, Viineet Kumar Siingh, and Ashutosh Rana in pivotal roles.
The Impact of Tax-Free Status
The tax-free status granted by Goa and Madhya Pradesh serves as an encouragement for more states to recognize films that highlight India’s cultural and historical heritage. By reducing the financial burden on moviegoers, these tax exemptions make films like ‘Chhaava’ accessible to a wider audience, fostering an appreciation for historical narratives and Indian cinema.
As ‘Chhaava’ continues to perform well at the box office, it is poised to become a staple in historical filmography, inspiring filmmakers to explore stories of bravery, sacrifice, and the unforgettable impact of leaders like Sambhaji Maharaj.
