VA TECH WABAG, a leader in water technology, has expanded its presence in Africa with the winning of a significant €78 million contract for wastewater treatment plants in Zambia. This Design, Build, and Operate (DBO) order from Lusaka Water Supply and Sanitation Company (LWSC) marks a major milestone in WABAG’s strategy to enhance its influence in Africa’s water sector. This project is funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW), two prominent financial institutions dedicated to sustainable development. The plants will address critical water and sanitation needs in Zambia’s capital, Lusaka.
WABAG will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of two advanced Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). One plant, located in Ngwerere, will have a capacity of 54 MLD, while the other in Chunga will have a capacity of 19 MLD. The EPC phase will last 36 months, followed by 24 months of operation and maintenance (O&M) to ensure the plants’ sustainable operation. This contract reinforces WABAG’s role as a leading water solutions provider, capable of delivering high-quality projects that meet the growing demand for clean water and efficient wastewater treatment in Africa.
The project is set to have a significant impact on Zambia’s water infrastructure, contributing to the country’s broader goals of improving sanitation and reducing environmental pollution. With green energy integration, the plants will primarily rely on sustainable energy sources such as biogas and solar power, reducing their environmental footprint and ensuring long-term sustainability. This aligns perfectly with WABAG’s vision of providing innovative and sustainable solutions to global water challenges.
Commenting on this remarkable achievement, Mr. Guhan Kandasamy, Head of Sales and Marketing (Africa) at WABAG, expressed gratitude towards LWSC for trusting the company with one of Zambia’s largest sanitation projects in recent decades. The project not only contributes to Zambia’s water and sanitation infrastructure but also positively impacts the daily lives of many Zambians.
This strategic win in Zambia further strengthens WABAG’s position in the African market, building on its already impressive track record of delivering over 1,500 water and wastewater treatment plants worldwide. As a pure-play water technology multinational, WABAG continues to demonstrate its leadership in water sustainability with a focus on resource conservation, recycling, and reuse. By leveraging its extensive expertise, the company is actively contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and advancing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across its operations.
WABAG’s market expansion in Zambia highlights the growing importance of global water management solutions, where innovation and sustainability are at the core. The company’s involvement in such high-impact projects makes it an ideal partner for countries looking to address their water and sanitation challenges while promoting economic growth and environmental protection.
The successful award of this contract will not only provide clean water and improve sanitation in Zambia but also showcase WABAG's expertise in executing large-scale international projects. The advanced treatment technology used in the plants will serve as a model for similar projects across Africa, positioning WABAG as a leader in the global water treatment sector.
