Bollywood’s highly anticipated action spy thriller War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR and Kiara Advani, opened to an explosive response at the Indian box office on Thursday, August 14, 2025. Directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced under the Yash Raj Films banner, the sequel to the 2019 blockbuster War kicked off its theatrical run amid high expectations and delivered a power-packed ₹52.5 crore collection on day one. Despite facing a direct clash with Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’, War 2 maintained strong traction across multiplexes and single screens, becoming one of the biggest openers of the year so far.

The film witnessed a total Hindi occupancy of 29.24%, which surged significantly during night shows, where occupancy touched 47.90%, reflecting solid walk-ins from the evening onwards.
Region-wise, southern markets led the chart, with Chennai delivering the highest occupancy at 77.50% followed by Hyderabad, which recorded an impressive 73.50%. The Bengaluru region also performed well with 49.50% occupancy, while Lucknow registered 42.50% and Kolkata clocked 39%, indicating a strong opening across tier-1 and tier-2 markets.

Made on a reported budget of ₹400 crore, War 2 is a key part of the expanding YRF Spy Universe and brings together two of India’s biggest superstars for the first time. The film follows the story of Kabir Dhaliwal, a highly skilled secret agent accused of betraying the nation, and Vikram, his batchmate tasked with tracking him down. The cast also features Ashutosh Rana, Anil Kapoor, Varun Badola in key roles, while Bobby Deol makes a surprise post-credit cameo appearance – a moment that has sparked excitement among fans.

War 2 has capitalised on the festive weekend and the massive fan following of both Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, with trade analysts already predicting a bumper first weekend. If high occupancies sustain across Saturday and Sunday, the film is likely to enter the ₹150-₹160 crore mark by the end of the extended weekend.

The strong opening of War 2 reaffirms the audience’s growing interest in large-scale, high-octane spy thrillers and is a positive sign for the YRF Spy Universe, which continues to expand with interconnected storylines and star-studded crossovers. All eyes are now on the weekend numbers to see whether War 2 can maintain momentum and challenge the highest weekend collection records of the year.
