Wayanad Landslide Relief Demands Escalate in Parliament
Amid ongoing winter parliamentary sessions, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, along with several opposition MPs from Kerala, staged a protest outside Parliament demanding immediate disaster relief for Wayanad. The district recently suffered extensive damage due to severe landslides, leaving communities displaced and infrastructures severely affected.
Despite multiple appeals to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, the Central government has yet to announce a relief package for Wayanad. The opposition claims that the delay is politically motivated, pointing out that aid was promptly provided for similar natural disasters in other states, such as Himachal Pradesh, which faced severe landslides earlier this year.
Accusations of Political Neglect
The Congress party and other Kerala opposition MPs have accused the BJP-led Centre of showing political bias in disaster aid allocation. "It’s been weeks since we requested relief for Wayanad," said Priyanka Gandhi during the protest. "This is a humanitarian issue, not a political one. The people of Wayanad deserve the same attention and urgency as citizens in any other state."
The MPs further criticized the Central government for dismissing Kerala's repeated appeals. They emphasized that Kerala, being governed by opposition parties, has faced discriminatory treatment in terms of natural disaster funding.
Comparisons with Himachal Pradesh Relief
The protestors highlighted that Himachal Pradesh, a BJP-ruled state, received prompt attention and relief following its landslides earlier this year. This disparity, according to opposition leaders, exposes double standards in the allocation of disaster relief funds. "Natural calamities don’t recognize party lines," remarked a senior Kerala MP.
Urgent Relief Measures Needed for Wayanad
The landslides in Wayanad have caused extensive destruction, including loss of lives, displacement of families, and severe damage to agricultural lands, which form the backbone of the district's economy. Local authorities have urged the Centre to provide immediate funding for rehabilitation, infrastructure rebuilding, and compensation for affected farmers.
The demand for a special disaster relief package remains critical, as the lack of timely intervention could worsen the district’s economic and social situation.
Parliamentary Response
The protest has added pressure on the Central government, with opposition parties vowing to raise the issue during ongoing sessions. While the ruling BJP has not issued a formal statement, political observers expect the government to address the growing concerns, given the spotlight on equity in disaster relief distribution.
