India’s 15th Vice Presidential Election is scheduled for September 9, 2025, following the abrupt resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21 due to health reasons. With the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) holding 293 Lok Sabha and 133 Rajya Sabha members—totaling 426 lawmakers—the ruling coalition is in a strong position to secure the post, possibly even without a contest.
Historically, only four vice presidential elections have been won unopposed. In 2022, Dhankhar registered the biggest victory in 30 years, defeating Congress-backed Margaret Alva with 528 votes against 182, a margin of 346 votes.
While most VP elections have been straightforward, the 2007 contest stands out for its rare triangular format. That year, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) nominated Mohammad Hamid Ansari, a retired diplomat, as its candidate. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fielded Najma Heptulla. Adding intrigue, the Samajwadi Party (SP) put forward Rasheed Masood, a five-time MP from Saharanpur, backed by AIADMK and MDMK.
The results reflected a decisive UPA win but also a surprisingly significant share for the third front:
-
Mohammad Hamid Ansari (UPA) — 455 votes (60.51%)
-
Najma Heptulla (NDA) — 222 votes (29.52%)
-
Rasheed Masood (SP) — 75 votes (9.49%)
Ansari’s victory cemented his place in political history, but Masood’s nearly 10% vote share demonstrated the capacity of smaller alliances to disrupt expected outcomes.
In 2025, however, the NDA’s numerical advantage, combined with potential cross-voting similar to Dhankhar’s election, could make the contest far less competitive—unless the Opposition consolidates around a strong candidate.
The upcoming election will not only determine India’s next Vice President but will also test whether the political climate allows for surprises like 2007’s three-way fight, or if the result will be a repeat of past dominant victories.
