  • White House Office of Management and Budget dismisses Congressional Budget Office’s $2.4 trillion deficit forecast from Trump’s mega domestic policy bill by 2034.

  • Elon Musk intensifies opposition by posting ‘Kill the Bill’ meme on X, criticising Trump’s bill as a “disgusting abomination” days after leaving White House role.

  • Trump urges Senate to pass the bill by July 4 amid tough congressional negotiations, with Senate Majority Leader John Thune expressing confidence despite criticism.

The White House on June 5, 2025, firmly defended Donald Trump’s high-profile policy mega-bill, pushing back against predictions from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) that the legislation could add $2.4 trillion to the US deficit by 2034. Russ Vought, head of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, described the CBO’s figures as inaccurate, stating the administration is in a “very good place” with the bill.

Despite the White House’s optimism, the bill faces significant resistance in Congress, especially in the Senate, where its passage is uncertain. The package aims to extend Trump’s 2017 tax relief measures by increasing national debt and implementing cuts to social welfare programs affecting poorer Americans.

Adding to the political drama, Elon Musk, the tech billionaire who recently resigned as head of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, posted a sharp critique on his social media platform X. Musk urged followers to “KILL the BILL” and shared a meme referencing Quentin Tarantino’s violent film Kill Bill, featuring Uma Thurman in a blood-soaked scene. Musk had earlier labelled the bill a “disgusting abomination.”

The bill cleared the House of Representatives last week but now faces a crucial vote in the Senate. Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune visited the White House amid ongoing negotiations and expressed confidence that the bill would pass. When asked about Musk’s deficit concerns, Thune stated, “We believe the opposite.”

Trump has called on the Senate to approve the bill by July 4, warning that “failure is not an option.” The legislation is viewed as a defining element of Trump’s second term agenda and could shape Republican prospects in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections.

This escalating debate highlights the growing political tensions surrounding fiscal policy, governance reforms, and budget management in the United States.
