On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya made an impactful statement emphasizing that women should be respected more than worshiped. Speaking at an event organized by the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) on March 4, 2025, Justice Upadhyaya highlighted that gender equality is still a goal that India has yet to fully achieve, urging the need to shift societal mindsets regarding gender-related issues.

Empowering Women through DSLSA’s ‘Virangana’ Project

During the same event, the Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) introduced the ‘Virangana’ project, aimed at empowering women from marginalized communities to become para-legal volunteers (PLVs). This initiative focuses on training women, including survivors of sexual offenses, acid attacks, and transgender individuals, providing them the skills needed to offer legal support and advice. The project is designed to foster empowerment while also addressing challenges women face in accessing legal assistance.

Special Initiatives and Training for Women Victims

As part of its celebration of International Women’s Day, the DSLSA has arranged a series of activities, including a 30-hour certification course in food and beverages for 40 victims of sexual offenses. This course, provided by the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) at no cost, aims to offer practical skills for financial independence. Furthermore, the DSLSA is hosting a Job Fair for these women, creating opportunities in the hospitality sector with the help of stakeholders from the Union Ministry of Tourism.

Recognition and Further Steps for Women Empowerment

In recognition of the outstanding contributions of women legal services advocates and PLVs, the event also honored several women who have excelled in their roles. The focus of the event and the initiatives that followed was to empower women, ensure equal treatment, and offer greater legal support to those in need.

These efforts reflect the ongoing commitment to women’s rights, helping them become leaders in society and agents of change.
