India Yamaha Motor Pvt Ltd IYM achieved a significant milestone on Wednesday June 4 2025, by rolling out its 5 millionth two wheeler from its Chennai manufacturing plant, coinciding with the celebration of 10 years of operations at the facility. The landmark vehicle was the Aerox 155 Version S, a performance-oriented scooter catering to India’s growing premium segment.
The Chennai factory, which began operations in 2015, has now emerged as a cornerstone of Yamaha’s global manufacturing ecosystem, playing a dual role of serving Indian customers and catering to key export markets. Over the decade, the facility has expanded its capacity, diversified its portfolio, and consistently contributed to Yamaha’s market growth in India and overseas.
Strategic manufacturing hub with global relevance
Currently, the Chennai plant manufactures Yamaha’s hybrid scooter range, which includes the RayZR 125 Fi and Fascino 125 Fi, both popular in India’s urban commuter category. The Aerox 155 Version S, which marked the 5 millionth unit, reflects the brand’s increasing focus on performance and youth-oriented mobility.
In addition to domestic supply, Yamaha uses the Chennai plant as a crucial export base. The facility produces units of the FZ series, Saluto range, and Alpha scooter, which are exported to markets across Asia, Latin America, and Africa. According to the company, over 30 percent of the plant’s total output is dedicated to export markets, underlining its global manufacturing capability.
Leadership praise and future commitment
Itaru Otani, Chairman of Yamaha Motor India Group of Companies, highlighted the plant’s transformation into a modern, strategically vital component of Yamaha’s worldwide operations. He said the Chennai factory exemplifies Yamaha’s focus on people, processes, and products, supported by skilled workers, synchronised operations, and strict global quality standards.
He emphasised that the facility has helped advance India’s mobility ambitions while also serving as a trusted export base for global markets. He acknowledged the contributions of employees, vendor partners, and customers, and reiterated Yamaha’s commitment to addressing evolving demands across Indian and international segments.
Versatility across markets and categories
Today, the Chennai factory supports the production of two wheelers across categories—from affordable scooters for urban riders in India to premium bikes customised for international markets. The plant’s advanced manufacturing capabilities enable Yamaha to meet market demands in Europe, Latin America, the ASEAN region, and beyond.
This milestone comes at a time when India’s two wheeler sector is recovering post-COVID and adapting to evolving mobility trends, including electric and hybrid innovations. Yamaha’s Chennai plant is expected to continue playing a central role in future product rollouts, R&D integrations, and international collaborations.
Export-driven growth and localisation strategy
Yamaha’s increasing focus on localisation of components and India’s emergence as a cost-effective manufacturing destination has also played a key role in making the Chennai facility globally competitive. With over three decades of experience in India, Yamaha has continued to blend its Japanese engineering excellence with local market needs.
The company is also investing in digital innovation, AI-powered production systems, and employee upskilling initiatives, which will further improve its manufacturing excellence. The Chennai facility is now positioned to play a leading role in Yamaha’s plans for electrification and next-gen urban mobility platforms in the coming years.
