In a recent interview, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath spoke out against the ongoing row over the use of Hindi in Tamil Nadu, accusing leaders of creating the controversy for their narrow political interests. The language dispute between Tamil Nadu and Hindi-speaking states, primarily centered around the imposition of Hindi, has stirred significant debate in recent months, with leaders on both sides exchanging sharp criticisms.

Yogi Adityanath, in his conversation with PTI, argued that regional languages like Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and others, which are taught in Uttar Pradesh schools, are contributing to job creation and employment opportunities rather than limiting the scope of development.

Language Diversity in UP Schools

The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh emphasized that the state has made significant strides in offering a diverse range of language options to its students. According to Yogi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi are taught in UP schools, and this inclusivity has enhanced opportunities for the youth in the state. He also pointed out that despite the inclusion of multiple languages, Uttar Pradesh has not become smaller or less significant. In fact, new employment opportunities have been created as a result of this multilingual approach.

Yogi Adityanath directly addressed the criticisms from Tamil Nadu leaders, especially from the DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) party, claiming that such divisive statements only serve the narrow political goals of some leaders and hurt the future of the youth. He further clarified that those politicizing the issue of language imposition are unintentionally targeting employment opportunities for young people.

Congress Challenges Yogi's Claims

The opposition also weighed in on the ongoing debate. Congress leader Karti Chidambaram has demanded details from the UP government regarding the teaching of Tamil in schools. The Congress MP questioned how many teachers in UP are actually trained to teach Tamil and asked for data on how many students have opted for Tamil as a language option in the state. His post on X (formerly Twitter), with the hashtag #StopHindiImposition, raised concerns about the imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu. He further questioned why migrant workers in Tamil Nadu, many of whom do not know Tamil, should be forced to learn the language, adding that there should not be a compulsion for Tamil Nadu students to learn Hindi.

Tamil Nadu's Education Policy and Funding Concerns

In a related issue, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin raised concerns after the central government withheld funds meant for the Samagra Shiksha scheme in Tamil Nadu. The government cited the state's refusal to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) as the reason for withholding the Rs 2,152 crore. CM Stalin expressed his dissatisfaction with this decision, arguing that it would affect the Right to Education (RTE) Act, which is vital for supporting the educational needs of students in the state. Stalin urged the central government to release the withheld funds, claiming that the move was unjustified and detrimental to the education sector in Tamil Nadu.

The debate over language, education policy, and the withholding of funds highlights the tensions between the central government, Tamil Nadu, and political leaders in the state, with many arguing that such disputes are ultimately a distraction from more important issues, including job creation and economic development.

Conclusion

The controversy surrounding the imposition of Hindi in Tamil Nadu has become a politically charged issue, with leaders from both sides using it as a platform for furthering their political agendas. Yogi Adityanath argues that such issues are creating divisions where none exist and are harming the job prospects of the youth in states like Uttar Pradesh. On the other hand, opposition leaders, including Congress, continue to challenge these claims, demanding transparency and a fair approach to the issue. With education policies and funding at stake, this issue is likely to continue to evolve, influencing political discourse in the country.
