Yuri Grigorovich was a towering figure in the world of ballet known for his extraordinary impact on Soviet and Russian ballet throughout the 20th century. Born in 1927 just after the Bolshevik Revolution his career spanned decades during which he shaped the artistic direction of the prestigious Bolshoi Ballet.

As the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet from 1964 to 1995 Grigorovich led the company with strong leadership often described as an iron fist. Under his guidance the Bolshoi became internationally renowned for its powerful and innovative productions.

Grigorovich’s choreography redefined Soviet ballet through masterpieces like the Stone Flower Ivan the Terrible and Romeo and Juliet. He was especially praised for revitalising male ballet roles creating parts that demanded exceptional physical strength and artistic expression from male dancers.

His ballet style was influenced by classical traditions passed down from his uncle Georgy Rozai who had trained under the legendary Vaslav Nijinsky. Before becoming a choreographer Grigorovich danced as a soloist with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad gaining deep insights into performance and technique.

In 1995 Grigorovich’s departure from the Bolshoi was marked by controversy and tensions over contracts with performers. This led to the first ever dancers strike in the theatre’s 200-year history where a dancer informed the audience of a cancelled performance causing stunned silence.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union the Bolshoi faced instability and Grigorovich moved to Krasnodar where he founded a new ballet company. He returned to the Bolshoi in 2008 as a choreographer and ballet master remaining active in the art he loved.

Grigorovich received many prestigious awards including People’s Artist of the USSR and Hero of Socialist Labour. His wife Natalia Bessmertnova was a renowned ballerina who passed away in 2008.

His death coincided with that of Yuri Vladimirov one of his most celebrated collaborators aged 83. Valery Gergiev head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres called Grigorovich a legendary figure whose influence will continue to inspire for decades to come.

Yuri Grigorovich’s legacy remains deeply embedded in ballet history his work inspiring generations of dancers and choreographers and ensuring his place as a giant in the world of dance.
