Zakir Naik arrived in Pakistan for his first visit in over 30 years, receiving a warm welcome and strong security.
He is scheduled to deliver lectures in major cities including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad until October 28.
Naik is wanted in India for alleged money laundering and inciting extremism but has been granted residency in Malaysia.
In a highly publicized event, Dr. Zakir Naik, a controversial and often polarizing figure, has arrived in Pakistan, where he received a red-carpet welcome upon his landing. Naik, who is considered one of India's most wanted individuals, has been granted extensive security for his travels across the country during his month-long visit. According to The Dawn, a prominent Pakistani media outlet, Naik is scheduled to deliver lectures in major cities, including Karachi, Islamabad, and Lahore.
This visit marks Naik's first trip to Pakistan in over 30 years; the last time he visited was in 1992, when he met with renowned religious scholar Dr. Israr Ahmed in Lahore before returning to India. Upon his arrival in Islamabad, Naik shared a video showcasing the security measures put in place by the Pakistani government. He was welcomed by officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and PM's aide Rana Mashhood, who facilitated his arrival at Islamabad International Airport.
During his stay, Naik is set to address public gatherings, starting in Karachi on October 5. Subsequent events will take place in Lahore on October 12 and Islamabad on October 19. Reports indicate that Naik will also meet with senior government officials and participate in various public engagements throughout his visit, which is expected to continue until October 28.
Zakir Naik is a controversial Islamic preacher known for his provocative speeches and has been accused of radicalizing youth through his sermons. Indian authorities have charged him with money laundering and inciting extremism, leading him to leave India in 2016. Following his departure, Naik was granted permanent residency in Malaysia under the previous government led by Mahathir Mohamed. Despite repeated requests from New Delhi for his extradition, Malaysia has yet to comply with these demands.
In a recent development, during Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's visit to New Delhi last month, he hinted that his government might reconsider India’s extradition request if sufficient evidence against Naik is provided.
As Zakir Naik embarks on this significant visit to Pakistan, it raises questions about his influence in the region and the implications of his teachings on the socio-political landscape. His ability to engage with large audiences while facing serious legal challenges in India demonstrates the complexities surrounding his status as a religious figure.
