Fighting intensifies with recent attacks, including damage to Russian nuclear-capable jets and civilian casualties in Kharkiv, while diplomatic talks continue.
A Russian drone attack struck a residential house in Pryluky, central Ukraine, killing five people, including a one-year-old baby and three generations of a single family, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed on June 5, 2025. The victims included the wife, daughter, and grandson of a local firefighter who was responding to an earlier attack when his own home was hit.
The drone strike, which set fire to several houses and caused widespread damage, has been met with harsh criticism from Zelenskyy. He accused Moscow of trying to buy time to continue its campaign of killing and urged the West to impose maximum sanctions and pressure on Russia to force an end to the conflict.
Photographs from the scene showed black smoke billowing from burnt houses and rescuers working amidst the destruction. One powerful image depicted a firefighter standing in the ashes of the destroyed home, highlighting the tragic human cost of the ongoing war.
This deadly incident comes amid escalated fighting and aerial attacks in Ukraine, despite ongoing peace talks between the two sides held in Istanbul. The war, now in its fourth year since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced millions.
Adding to the tension, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned US President Donald Trump on June 4, 2025, that Moscow would respond firmly after a recent Ukrainian drone attack destroyed several Russian nuclear-capable military jets. Meanwhile, another attack on Kharkiv wounded 18 people, including four children, showing the continuing toll on civilians.
Zelenskyy’s call for greater international action reflects the dire situation on the ground and the urgent need for diplomatic efforts backed by stronger sanctions to end the devastating conflict.
