In a significant appeal to the international community, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called upon India and other nations to prepare for a second peace summit aimed at ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. This invitation was extended during his address to the UN Security Council on Tuesday, where he emphasized the need for united action to conclude Russia's military aggression without creating new divisions among nations.
Zelenskyy stated, “Unity always works for peace, and we have to prepare the second peace summit to end the war altogether. And I invite all of you, all principle nations to join us in this process, all who truly respect the UN Charter.” He highlighted that countries such as China, Brazil, and India have been invited to engage in this diplomatic process, along with nations from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Central Asia, Europe, the Pacific region, and North America. The Ukrainian leader believes that this collaborative effort will pave the way for a "just peace," characterized by determination and adherence to the principles outlined in the UN Charter.
This appeal comes shortly after Zelenskyy's bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. This marks their third meeting this year, highlighting the strengthening ties between India and Ukraine. The discussions centered on the current situation in Ukraine and the possible avenues for pursuing peace. Zelenskyy noted the meeting as "very good," reflecting a mutual desire for enhanced cooperation.
During their talks, Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s clear and consistent approach towards achieving a peaceful resolution to the conflict through diplomacy and dialogue. He expressed India's willingness to provide support within its capabilities to facilitate a lasting resolution to the ongoing strife. This engagement underlines India's commitment to promoting stability and peace in the region, despite the complexities involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The First Peace Summit and Its Impact
The discussions around the upcoming peace summit were further informed by the first peace summit held in Switzerland in June, where world leaders gathered in hopes of pressing Russia to halt its military actions in Ukraine. However, the absence of both Moscow and Beijing during those talks is believed to have diminished the summit's effectiveness. The Indian delegation, led by Pavan Kapoor, Secretary (West), participated in both the opening and closing plenary sessions but did not endorse any communique or documents arising from those discussions.
According to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, various topics were discussed with President Zelenskyy, including the outcomes of the Swiss summit and the ongoing efforts by Ukraine to promote peace. The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized that India’s participation in the summit aligned with its consistent stance on facilitating a sustainable resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. The ministry reiterated the belief that any peaceful resolution necessitates genuine engagement between both conflicting parties.
As the global community looks toward future diplomatic efforts, Zelenskyy's invitation to India underscores the importance of collective action in addressing the complexities of international conflicts. The second peace summit represents an opportunity for nations to unite in their commitment to peace and stability, with the hope that concerted efforts can lead to a lasting resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war.
