Zelenskyy arrives in Washington with a united group of European leaders to avoid unilateral concessions and ensure coordinated transatlantic support
Ahead of his highly anticipated meeting at the White House on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that only strength and resolve can force Russia to end its ongoing war in Ukraine—and he believes US President Donald Trump possesses that strength.
Writing on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy stressed:
“Russia can only be forced into peace through strength, and President Trump has that strength.”
The comments come as diplomatic momentum appears to be shifting. Zelenskyy arrived in Washington on Monday and met with Keith Kellogg, the US Presidential Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia, to discuss initial plans before heading into talks with Trump on Tuesday.
Kyiv Ready for Durable Peace — But Not at Any Cost
Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy reiterated that Ukraine remains ready for peace, but would not accept deals that compromise its sovereignty or territorial integrity:
“Ukrainians are fighting for their land, for their independence… Crimea should not have been given up then, just as Ukrainians did not give up Kyiv, Odesa, or Kharkiv after 2022.”
He added that Ukrainian troops were making gains in Donetsk and Sumy, stating, “We will defend Ukraine and effectively guarantee its security with our American and European friends.”
Europe Shows Rare Unity in Washington
Recognising the diplomatic risk of unilateral U.S.–Russia talks, Zelenskyy brought an extraordinary group of European leaders to Washington in an effort to present a united transatlantic front during his Oval Office discussions.
The leaders of France, Germany, Britain, Finland and Italy, along with senior EU and NATO officials, joined Zelenskyy to underline that any peace plan must include European security guarantees and cannot be decided solely by Washington and Moscow.
“It’s important that America agrees to work with Europe to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, and therefore for all of Europe,” Zelenskyy said.
Trump Puts Pressure on Kyiv
Despite Zelenskyy’s optimism, Trump’s recent comments have raised questions. On Sunday night, he posted on social media that Zelenskyy could “end the war almost immediately, if he wants to”, suggesting that Crimea cannot be recovered and reiterating that Ukraine should not join NATO.
“Remember how it started… No getting back Obama-given Crimea… and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE,” Trump wrote.
The statement reflects a growing concern in Europe that Kyiv could face pressure to offer concessions on key issues such as NATO membership and territorial claims in order to secure a deal.
What Comes Next?
Trump confirmed that he has already spoken to President Vladimir Putin, and that a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy is being planned. According to Trump, the trilateral format (Trump, Zelenskyy, Putin) would follow after that.
For Zelenskyy, this may represent the best opportunity in years to bring meaningful diplomatic pressure on Moscow — but also a risk that Western unity fractures if Ukraine is urged to make concessions it cannot accept.
