Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has welcomed the idea of a trilateral summit involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine, saying Kyiv is “ready for a trilateral meeting” if it helps advance concrete peace efforts.
Speaking to reporters in Washington after his first in-person meeting with Donald Trump at the White House, Zelenskyy clarified that no date had been fixed for a direct meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but confirmed his government’s readiness to join the proposed diplomatic format.

“We confirmed that we are ready for a trilateral meeting, and if Russia proposes a bilateral meeting to the President of the United States, then we will see the result of the bilateral meeting. After that we can go for a trilateral,” Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukraine will never stop pursuing peace and is open to “any kind of format, but on the level of leaders.”

Trump Initiates New Diplomatic Track

The remarks came shortly after President Trump announced via Truth Social that he had spoken with Vladimir Putin and begun arranging a face-to-face meeting between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders.
Trump indicated that a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would be the first step, and that a trilateral meeting involving himself would follow.

The call between Trump and Putin marks the highest-level direct contact between Russia and the United States on the war since the conflict escalated in 2020. It also comes at a time when European leaders are increasingly concerned that Ukraine could face pressure to accept concessions that would favor Moscow’s interests.

European Reactions and Security Guarantees

Following the Washington talks, French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted that the most important outcome so far has been the U.S. commitment to coordinate with Europe on security guarantees for Ukraine.
Trump met not only with Zelenskyy but also with leaders from Germany, France, Britain, Finland and Italy, as well as top officials from the EU and NATO, during a marathon series of closed-door meetings in Washington.

While most European leaders welcomed the re-engagement, they also voiced concerns about Putin’s intentions and the lack of clarity around any future agreement. Several diplomats privately said that any negotiations must ensure the full sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, warning that a forced settlement could create even more instability in the long run.

Looking Ahead

Zelenskyy’s openness to a trilateral summit signals that Kyiv is willing to pursue every available diplomatic avenue, provided that Ukraine’s core interests are respected and that any agreed framework includes enforceable security assurances.

For now, much depends on the outcome of Trump’s proposed bilateral meeting with Putin, which will set the tone and parameters for any larger trilateral dialogue.
