Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on October 14, 2025, that he will travel to the United States this week to discuss the potential procurement of long-range weapons amid Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia. The visit is expected to include a meeting with US President Donald Trump on Friday, where Zelenskyy will focus on enhancing Ukraine’s air defence capabilities and strengthening long-range military options to maintain strategic pressure on Russian forces.

Zelenskyy’s decision comes shortly after President Trump warned Russia that the US is considering supplying long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. These missiles would enable Kyiv to target locations deeper inside Russian territory, significantly altering the dynamics of the conflict. Moscow reacted with “extreme concern”, with President Vladimir Putin warning that such action could severely damage US-Russia relations.

During a meeting with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, Zelenskyy highlighted the need for additional US support to protect Ukraine’s electricity and gas infrastructure, which has been repeatedly targeted by Russian attacks. These attacks have intensified ahead of the winter season, with drones and missiles striking key regions, including the Black Sea port city of Odesa and the northern Chernihiv region, resulting in casualties and significant infrastructure damage.

Zelenskyy described a recent phone call with President Trump as “very productive,” setting the stage for his upcoming visit. The US has indicated willingness to consider Tomahawk missile deployment, sending a strong message to Russia while reaffirming support for Ukraine’s defence needs. Zelenskyy is expected to join the Ukrainian delegation already in the US, led by Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, to hold detailed discussions on military aid, infrastructure protection, and long-term strategic cooperation.

The proposed missile supply and US support come at a critical time as Russia intensifies attacks on Ukraine’s energy and gas networks, raising concerns about electricity shortages and civilian hardships during the approaching winter. The visit underscores Kyiv’s determination to strengthen defensive and deterrence capabilities while deepening strategic relations with the United States and other international partners committed to Ukraine’s sovereignty.
