The arrest of AAP MLA Naresh Balyan has created a political storm, with allegations of extortion and conspiracy dominating headlines. The Uttam Nagar legislator, known for his close association with AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal, was remanded to two days of judicial custody following his arrest in a high-profile extortion case.

Balyan has vehemently denied the charges, claiming his arrest was orchestrated under BJP pressure. "This is all fake, nothing else. I have been arrested under BJP's pressure," Balyan told reporters while being escorted from the Rouse Avenue Court on Sunday.

The Extortion Allegations
The Delhi Police Crime Branch detained Naresh Balyan on Saturday evening for questioning about an extortion case linked to 2023. The investigation gained traction after an audio clip surfaced, allegedly capturing a conversation between Balyan and notorious gangster Kapil Sangwan. The discussion reportedly involved ransom demands from businessmen, leading to Balyan’s arrest.

In response, the BJP released the audio clip, accusing the AAP leader of direct involvement in criminal activities. This move has intensified the already tense political climate between the two parties.

AAP’s Defense
Senior AAP leaders have rallied in support of Balyan, asserting that the charges are baseless and politically motivated. Arvind Kejriwal described Balyan as a "victim of gangsters" who had actively reported threats against him and his family to the police.

“Yesterday, one of our MLAs was arrested. That MLA was also a victim of gangsters. He had made a written complaint to Delhi Police that he was getting calls from Kapil Sangwan. He had complained on May 23, 2023, that a call came from Nandu Gang, threatening him and his family,” Kejriwal revealed during a press briefing.

AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar echoed similar sentiments, accusing the authorities of punishing Balyan for reporting criminal threats. “Naresh Balyan was arrested because he informed about the extortion calls he was receiving. A message is being given that if you will complain, you will be sent to jail,” Kakkar stated.

Political Ramifications
The arrest has triggered another round of bitter exchanges between the AAP and BJP, with the ruling party using the incident to question AAP’s governance. On the other hand, Balyan has vowed to fight back, stating that he will lodge police cases against those spreading falsehoods about him.
