The Air India flight crashed near Ahmedabad on June 12, 2025, resulting in multiple fatalities.
The Government of India on Thursday (June 26, 2025) confirmed that critical data from the black boxes of the Air India aircraft that crashed near Ahmedabad on June 12 has been successfully retrieved, and that analysis is now underway to reconstruct what led to the fatal aviation disaster.
The announcement was made by the Civil Aviation Ministry, which said investigators are focusing on the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) to piece together the aircraft’s final moments.
Crash Protection Module Safely Retrieved
According to the Ministry, the Crash Protection Module (CPM) from the forward black box was safely retrieved shortly after the crash. On June 25, 2025, the memory module was successfully accessed and the stored data was downloaded at the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) Lab.
“The Crash Protection Module from the front black box was safely retrieved, and the memory module was successfully accessed,” the Ministry said in an official statement.
Cockpit Voice and Flight Data Under Forensic Review
Experts at the AAIB Lab are now analysing cockpit audio recordings, which capture conversations between pilots, background cockpit sounds, and communications with air traffic control, alongside flight parameter data from the FDR, which records speed, altitude, direction, and aircraft performance metrics.
This two-pronged investigation aims to identify whether the crash was caused by technical failure, human error, or environmental factors.
Timeline of the Crash
-
June 12, 2025: The Air India flight crashed during its approach to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, killing multiple passengers and crew members.
-
Post-crash: Rescue and recovery teams retrieved both black boxes within hours.
-
June 25, 2025: Memory module from the CPM was accessed and data downloaded for investigation.
What Happens Next
Authorities have confirmed that once data from both recorders is fully analysed, a preliminary report will be released. A full technical report could take weeks or months, depending on the complexity of findings.
The Ministry also stated that the investigation will be conducted in accordance with ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards, ensuring transparency, technical accuracy, and safety compliance.
National and Global Implications
The crash has triggered widespread concerns over flight safety, aircraft maintenance, and pilot training standards. Aviation watchdogs, including DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and international bodies, are closely monitoring developments.
The findings from the black box analysis are expected to have broader implications for aviation safety policy, not just in India but also for global aviation operators.
