Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday, May 22, 2025, called for a comprehensive and long-term approach to clean the Yamuna river, one of the most polluted rivers in India, and improve the water quality and sanitation infrastructure in Delhi. Speaking on the occasion, Shah emphasized the urgent need to adopt a holistic strategy to restore the river’s health while ensuring safe drinking water for the city’s residents.

He directed the Delhi government to take concrete steps to strengthen the sewage system, which is a major contributor to the pollution of the Yamuna. The untreated sewage discharged into the river severely affects water quality and public health. Shah’s call comes amid growing concerns over the deteriorating condition of the Yamuna and the pressing need to upgrade Delhi’s water and sanitation infrastructure.

A key point in Shah’s directives was to modernise the drainage system in Delhi to handle stormwater effectively and prevent flooding in vulnerable areas. He highlighted that many parts of the city suffer from waterlogging and drainage blockages, which exacerbate pollution and sanitation issues.

Further, Amit Shah stressed the importance of filling vacancies in the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the agency responsible for water supply and sewage management in the city. He noted that the shortage of staff has hindered efficient functioning and implementation of crucial projects related to water and sewerage.

The Union Home Minister urged for coordinated efforts between the central and Delhi governments to deploy advanced technologies and best practices for river cleaning and infrastructure development. Shah’s remarks underline the government’s focus on sustainable urban water management and environmental conservation.

Cleaning the Yamuna river has long been a significant challenge due to the large volume of untreated sewage, industrial effluents, and solid waste dumped into it. The holistic plan advocated by Amit Shah includes improving sewage treatment plants, regular monitoring of water quality, community engagement, and stringent enforcement of pollution control measures.

With the Yamuna being a lifeline for millions, Shah’s call to action is expected to accelerate ongoing projects and inspire new initiatives to revive the river and protect Delhi’s water resources. The emphasis on safe drinking water and sanitation aligns with the broader goals of public health and urban resilience in the rapidly growing capital.
