Voting is underway for Assembly byelections in five key constituencies across India on Thursday, June 19, 2025, marking the first round of electoral activity under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who assumed office in February this year.

The constituencies going to the polls are Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab, Kaliganj in West Bengal, and Visavadar and Kadi in Gujarat. Polling commenced at 7:00 AM and will continue until 6:00 PM, under tight security and extensive logistical arrangements by the Election Commission of India.

Smooth Polling with Minor Disruption in Bengal

According to election officials, the polling process has remained largely peaceful and orderly. However, a minor incident was reported in West Bengal’s Kaliganj constituency, where the Congress party alleged that its polling agent was forcibly evicted from a polling booth in Nadia district by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers. The ruling TMC, however, denied any wrongdoing, stating that polling has been conducted fairly.

Officials from the Election Commission are reported to be probing the complaint.

Significance of the Bypolls

These byelections are critical in assessing the political momentum ahead of the next round of assembly elections and also serve as local performance referendums for both ruling and opposition parties in the respective states.

• In Kerala, the Nilambur seat was vacated following the resignation of a sitting MLA.

• Ludhiana West in Punjab is expected to be a test for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.

• The two Gujarat seats, Visavadar and Kadi, are being watched as indicators of BJP’s grassroots support following the Lok Sabha results.

• In West Bengal, Kaliganj has seen high political activity, with both TMC and Congress-CPI(M) alliance vying for dominance.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s First Electoral Test

This set of bypolls also marks the first electoral exercise under the leadership of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, who took charge in February 2025. His conduct of the process is being closely monitored, especially amid political polarisation and rising expectations for fair electoral oversight.

Election Commission officials confirmed that webcasting and CCTV monitoring have been deployed at sensitive booths, while security personnel have been stationed strategically to prevent any escalation of tensions.

Counting and Results

The counting of votes for all five constituencies will be held on Sunday, June 23, 2025. Final results are expected by the afternoon, providing a snapshot of regional political alignments post the 2024 general elections.
