What's covered under the Article:

  1. Auto sales increased by 9% in 2024, reaching over 261 million units.
  2. Two-wheelers saw strong demand, while passenger vehicle sales rose 5%.
  3. December 2024 saw a 12% drop in retail sales due to high inventory and discounting.

In 2024, auto sales in India reached an impressive 9% year-on-year (YoY) increase, marking a strong recovery for the automobile retail sector despite several challenges faced throughout the year. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the total vehicle registrations reached a staggering 2,61,07,679 units, up from 2,39,28,293 units in 2023. This surge in sales is attributed to strong demand in the two-wheeler segment, alongside continued interest in passenger vehicles, even in a challenging business environment. Notable factors contributing to this positive performance include improved supply chains, new model launches, and strong consumer demand, particularly in rural areas.

Two-Wheeler Growth Outpaces Other Segments

The two-wheeler segment experienced significant growth, driven by a combination of better supply, the introduction of new models, and strong rural demand. This segment is crucial in India, as it remains the most popular mode of transportation for a large portion of the population, especially in rural and semi-urban areas. Despite the competitive pressure from electric vehicles (EVs), the two-wheeler sector was able to maintain its strong position in the market.

However, the segment was not without its challenges. Finance constraints and increasing competition from EVs added pressure, but the sector's overall performance remained resilient. The growth in two-wheeler sales continues to be vital for the overall health of the Indian automobile market.

Passenger Vehicles Continue to See Growth

In addition to two-wheelers, the passenger vehicle (PV) segment also grew by 5%, with 40,73,843 units sold in 2024, compared to 38,73,381 units in 2023. This growth was driven by network expansion and the introduction of new product offerings, which attracted more consumers to this category. However, the passenger vehicle sector also faced some pressures, especially in the latter half of the year. Margin pressures due to higher inventory levels and aggressive discounting were some of the hurdles faced by dealers. Despite these issues, the outlook for the passenger vehicle segment remains positive, with dealers expecting continued growth due to ongoing consumer interest in new SUV launches and feature-rich electric vehicles (EVs).

Commercial Vehicles and Tractors Remain Stable

Sales in the three-wheeler category also saw an uptick, with a growth rate of 11%, totaling 1,221,909 units. The tractor segment posted a modest 3% growth, with 894,112 units sold. On the other hand, commercial vehicle sales remained flat at 1,004,856 units in 2024, reflecting the overall challenges faced by the commercial sector, including inventory management and fluctuating demand.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, FADA anticipates further growth in the two-wheeler segment in the coming years, driven by rising rural incomes, continued new model launches, and a stabilizing EV market. Meanwhile, passenger vehicle dealers are hopeful about a sustained consumer interest in new SUV launches and EVs, which are expected to be packed with innovative features. However, the auto sector must remain cautious due to ongoing concerns like price sensitivity and fluctuations in interest rates.

The auto industry is expected to continue to face challenges from both the domestic and international market dynamics, but the overall outlook for 2025 remains optimistic. As India moves towards becoming a hub for EVs, it will be interesting to see how this shift impacts the overall automobile sales and market trends.

The December 2024 figures saw a 12% decline in retail sales, reaching 1,756,419 units. This decline was primarily due to high inventory levels and intense discounting during the festive period, which impacted two-wheeler and passenger vehicle sales.

In conclusion, the Indian automobile retail market showed remarkable resilience in 2024, and as we move into 2025, the focus will likely remain on the growth of two-wheelers and passenger vehicles while also managing the rising influence of electric vehicles and EV infrastructure development.
