Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML) has taken a historic leap in India’s green industrial innovation with the launch of Balrampur Bioyug, the country’s first branded Poly Lactic Acid (PLA) biopolymer. This significant milestone was officially inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, in a prestigious ceremony held at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai. The event attracted esteemed dignitaries including Mr. Ajit Pawar (Deputy CM), Mr. Sharad Pawar and Mr. Praful Patel (Members of Parliament), and Mr. Sandeep Bakhshi (MD & CEO of ICICI Bank), demonstrating the weight of this innovation for India's sustainable future.

A Game-Changing Industrial-Scale PLA Plant

The PLA plant, strategically positioned adjacent to BCML’s existing sugar factory in Kumbhi, Uttar Pradesh, symbolizes India’s first industrial-scale biopolymer facility that integrates the entire process of converting sugarcane into PLA within a single site. This vertical integration is a global first, marking not just a technological milestone but also a revolutionary step towards resource efficiency and supply chain optimization.

With a gross investment of Rs. 2,850 crores, the plant is designed to be a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing globally. It will be powered entirely by 100% renewable energy, ensuring a truly green production process. The plant’s annual capacity is set at 80,000 tonnes of PLA, a bio-based, compostable polymer that offers a credible and scalable solution to the escalating global plastic pollution crisis.

Why PLA Matters

PLA, or Polylactic Acid, is a plant-based biopolymer derived from renewable resources such as sugarcane. Unlike conventional fossil-based plastics, PLA boasts up to 80% lower carbon emissions over its lifecycle, making it an environmentally superior alternative. Its industrial compostability means it breaks down naturally without leaving harmful residues, thus supporting a circular economy model.

Balrampur Bioyug is positioned to replace banned single-use plastics like straws, disposable cutlery, trays, bottles, and curd cups, providing comparable durability and safety without compromising the environment. This aligns perfectly with India's ambitious climate targets, including the net zero emissions goal by 2070.

Bioyug on Wheels: Bringing PLA Awareness to Communities

Alongside the brand launch, BCML introduced Bioyug on Wheels, a pioneering mobile experience unit designed to engage stakeholders, businesses, and the general public. This mobile unit offers live demonstrations and interactive exhibits showcasing the versatility and real-world applications of PLA. It aims to foster widespread awareness and behavioral change by illustrating the tangible benefits of adopting green materials in daily life.

The initiative represents a strategic push to accelerate the adoption of sustainable plastics at the grassroots level, empowering communities and MSMEs (micro, small, and medium enterprises) to be active participants in the green transition.

Policy and Industry Support for Sustainable Growth

The launch event was enriched by insightful plenary sessions featuring leaders from government, industry, and academia such as Mr. Manoj Kumar Singh (IAS), Dr. Alka Sharma (DBT), Dr. Smita Mohanty (CIPET), and others. Discussions focused on crucial enablers for PLA adoption, including policy frameworks, technological innovation, and consumer education.

The synergy between BCML’s PLA initiative and India’s BioE3 policy—which promotes bioenergy, bioeconomy, and green innovation—was emphasized as a strong foundation for this green revolution. Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh Government’s first-ever Bioplastic Policy creates an enabling environment that boosts confidence for further investments in the bioplastic sector.

Leadership Vision: A Sustainable, Bio-Circular Economy

Mr. Vivek Saraogi, Chairman & Managing Director of BCML, highlighted the alignment of Balrampur Bioyug with national sustainability goals and the prime minister’s vision for green innovation. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to combating climate change through cutting-edge bio-based solutions.

Ms. Avantika Saraogi, Executive Director, articulated the brand’s deeper ethos—‘Bio’ reflecting plant-based sustainability, and ‘Yug’ symbolizing a new era of ecological responsibility and circularity. She underscored the vital role Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh will play in spearheading India’s bioplastic revolution, urging policymakers to support MSMEs through incentives and regulatory backing.

Mr. Stefan Barot, President of Chemicals Division at BCML, stressed the global significance of the integrated PLA plant and its potential to redefine bio-based manufacturing at scale. The initiative exemplifies a true circular economy model by leveraging surplus biomass and renewable energy for sustainable polymer production.

A Landmark for India’s Green Transition

The launch of Balrampur Bioyug marks a transformative milestone in India’s journey towards sustainable materials and circular economy. It exemplifies how industrial innovation, backed by strategic policy support and technological advancements, can drive impactful environmental change.

As India moves towards net zero emissions by 2070, pioneering projects like BCML’s PLA plant will be crucial in reducing plastic pollution and carbon footprint, while generating new value for farmers, industry stakeholders, and the planet.

Balrampur Bioyug is not just a product launch—it’s a revolution shaping India’s green future.
