In a move that promises to make commuting on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway more convenient, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled plans to construct a comprehensive service road along one side of the expressway. This development aims to enhance connectivity for towns located along the route and resolve existing traffic flow challenges.
Improving Access for Commuters
The 119-kilometer Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway was designed with the goal of reducing travel time between the two cities and improving overall traffic flow. However, the expressway’s lack of a complete service road has created significant issues for commuters. Travelers from towns such as Bidadi, Channapatna, and Maddur have been facing difficulties accessing or exiting the expressway, often having to take long detours to reach the highway. This issue has led to delays and increased travel time for locals.
With the newly announced plans, NHAI will construct a full-scale service road on the Bengaluru-to-Mysuru side of the expressway, eliminating the need for lengthy detours and providing smoother access for vehicles entering or exiting the highway. This will not only ease the travel experience for local commuters but also improve overall traffic flow on the expressway, benefiting both long-distance and local travelers.
Survey and Planning for Additional Infrastructure
To further enhance the efficiency of this project, a ground survey has already been completed to identify the locations for necessary infrastructure, such as underpasses and overpasses, to address geographical challenges like railway lines and hilly terrain. These new structures will ensure that the service road is functional and accessible for all vehicles, no matter the topography of the area. Additionally, the tendering process for the construction of the service road has been initiated, with construction set to begin once the process is completed.
Satellite-Based Toll Collection for Reduced Congestion
Along with the construction of the service road, NHAI is also focusing on improving the efficiency of toll collection along the expressway. The authority has plans to implement a satellite-based toll collection system that will use Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technology. The system will be installed at two toll collection points, allowing vehicles to pay tolls seamlessly without having to stop at traditional toll booths. This is expected to reduce congestion at the toll plazas and significantly cut down on the delays that often plague expressways.
The Indian Highways Management Corporation Limited (IHMCL) will oversee the installation of the GNSS system. Surveys and studies for the system have already been completed, and the tendering process for the installation will begin shortly. Once operational, the GNSS-based toll collection system is expected to significantly improve the commuting experience by reducing wait times and ensuring that traffic flows more smoothly along the expressway.
A Comprehensive Development Plan for Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway
Together, the construction of the service road and the GNSS-based toll system represent a significant step forward in improving the infrastructure along the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. These developments will enhance connectivity for the towns along the route, reduce commuting times, and address long-standing challenges faced by commuters. With the tendering process underway and construction expected to begin soon, both residents and travelers can look forward to a more efficient and user-friendly expressway.
