Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the director general of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), emphasized the system’s focus on all weather parameters with rain being the key. For India, the new BFS model has been developed by scientists at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), who customized the GFS data with an innovative grid structure dividing the globe into triangles. Supporting this ambitious initiative, the Indian government has invested nearly ₹900 crore (about $106 million) in a new supercomputer dedicated to weather and climate research. This state-of-the-art computing power will help process vast amounts of meteorological data quickly and accurately.

Additionally, India plans to more than double the size of its weather radar network within two years, ensuring the BFS receives comprehensive and timely data. These radars will provide real-time information on rainfall patterns, further enhancing the accuracy of forecasts.
