Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that tariffs were a key topic during his recent meeting with a visiting US congressional delegation in Ottawa. Speaking to Global News outside the West Block after the meeting concluded on Friday Carney said tariffs were part of the discussions.

The delegation consisted of prominent US lawmakers including Democrats Jeanne Shaheen Tim Kaine Amy Klobuchar and Peter Welch as well as Republican Kevin Cramer. Alongside Carney Canada’s ministers of foreign affairs national defence and industry were present at the meeting. Representatives from the Business Council of Canada also participated.

Ahead of the meeting the US foreign relations committee released a statement outlining the purpose was to reaffirm the deep bipartisan support for a strong partnership between Canada and the United States. This underscores the shared commitment from both countries to work closely on trade and economic matters including issues surrounding tariffs.

Carney’s acknowledgement of tariff discussions reflects ongoing concerns about trade relations between Canada and the US as both countries navigate economic policies and bilateral cooperation. The involvement of a diverse group of lawmakers from both parties indicates a united approach in the US Congress to maintain positive ties with Canada.

The meeting marks another step in diplomatic efforts to address trade challenges while strengthening collaboration on issues beyond tariffs including security and industry cooperation. Both sides appear focused on sustaining a constructive dialogue to support mutual economic growth and regional stability.

Overall the discussions reinforce the significance of the Canada-US relationship and the importance of bipartisan support in managing key bilateral issues such as tariffs in an evolving global trade environment.
