Chennai Day, also known as Madras Day, is celebrated every year on August 22 to commemorate the founding of the city in 1639. This special day is an occasion to honor the rich history, vibrant culture, and unique traditions of Chennai, one of India's most historic port cities.
The Origin of Chennai Day
The idea of celebrating Chennai Day was initiated in 2004 by a group of dedicated journalists — Shashi Nair, Vincent D’Souza, and S Muthiah. They recognized the need to celebrate the city’s past and present, bringing together its diverse communities to honor its storied heritage. Since then, Chennai Day has grown into a significant cultural event, with various activities organized across the city.
A Day of Celebration and Reflection
On Chennai Day, a wide range of events takes place throughout the city. Music shows, theatrical performances, exhibitions, talks, city walks, and school exchange programs are just some of the activities that mark this day. These events are hosted by various communities, groups, companies, colleges, and schools, each contributing to the celebration of Chennai's rich cultural landscape.
The Historical Roots of Chennai
The history of Chennai dates back to August 22, 1639, when the local Nayak ruler, Damarla Venkatadri Nayaka, struck a deal with the East India Company. He sold them a ‘sliver of land,’ which was the village of Madraspatnam or Chennapatnam. This land became the foundation of what we now know as Chennai.
To protect their trade interests, the East India Company built the impressive Fort St George on this land in the 1640s. Also known as the White Town, the fort is located along the Coromandel Coast and served as the nucleus from which settlements grew, eventually forming the city.
Key Historical Landmarks of Chennai
Chennai is home to several significant historical landmarks that reflect its rich past:
Greater Chennai Municipal Corporation: Established on September 29, 1688, the Greater Chennai Corporation is the oldest municipal corporation in India. Originally called the Corporation of Madras, it was inaugurated by a Royal Charter issued by King James II on December 30, 1687.
Madras Central Prison: Chennai once housed one of the oldest prisons in India. Madras Central Prison was built during the British Raj period in 1837 and operated until it was demolished in June 2009.
Madras High Court: Covering over 107 acres, the Madras High Court is the second-largest judicial complex in the world, slightly smaller than the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in London. The Indo-Saracenic red structure was completed in 1892, with a central tower added in 1912.

Chennai and World War I
One of the lesser-known facts about Chennai is that it was the only Indian city attacked during World War I. On September 22, 1914, the German cruiser SMS Emden attacked the city, which was under British rule at the time. The attack damaged several buildings, including the Madras High Court, the Port Trust, and the Boat House of the Madras Sailing Club. The assault resulted in the deaths of five sailors and injuries to thirteen others.
Conclusion: Celebrating the Spirit of Chennai
Chennai Day is more than just a commemoration of the city's founding; it is a celebration of its enduring spirit, rich heritage, and vibrant culture. As the city continues to grow and evolve, Chennai Day serves as a reminder of the historical roots that have shaped this dynamic metropolis. Whether through music, art, or history, the celebration of Chennai Day brings people together to honor the past while looking forward to the future.
