China has welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent remarks advocating for dialogue and cooperation in Sino-India relations, describing them as a “positive statement” that resonates with China’s vision of stability and progress. The remarks came during PM Modi's conversation with American podcaster Lex Fridman, where he stressed the importance of maintaining stability and fostering collaboration between the two Asian giants.

China Acknowledges Modi’s Positive Remarks

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, addressing a press briefing on Monday, expressed China's appreciation for PM Modi’s comments, emphasizing that his remarks align with China’s desire to maintain peace and progress in the region. Mao reiterated that China values Modi’s approach, particularly his focus on ensuring that differences between neighbors do not escalate into conflicts.

“Let me stress that in the 2,000-plus years of interaction, China and India have maintained friendly exchanges, learning from each other and contributing to civilizational achievements and human progress,” Mao stated.

Modi-Xi Meeting Provided Strategic Guidance

Mao highlighted the successful meeting between PM Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024, where both leaders provided strategic guidance to strengthen bilateral ties. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, was seen as a turning point in addressing border tensions and laying the groundwork for sustained diplomatic engagement.

“The meeting in Kazan provided essential strategic direction for the development of bilateral ties. Both sides have actively followed through on their commitments, resulting in strengthened diplomatic exchanges and positive outcomes,” Mao noted.

A Cooperative ‘Dance Between Dragon and Elephant’

Drawing inspiration from Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s remarks, Mao described the India-China relationship as a “cooperative pas de deux,” or a dance between the elephant and the dragon, emphasizing that collaboration remains the only viable choice for both nations. She emphasized that China and India, as the world’s two largest developing nations, share a common responsibility to advance growth, strengthen diplomatic ties, and address challenges that impact the Global South.

“This partnership serves the fundamental interests of 2.8 billion people, aligns with the aspirations of regional countries, and strengthens the Global South, ultimately contributing to world peace and stability,” Mao added.

China Ready to Work with India to Advance Ties

Mao reaffirmed China’s commitment to implementing key agreements made during the Modi-Xi discussions, highlighting the importance of building a stable and constructive relationship. She stressed that the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations presents a significant opportunity for both nations to strengthen ties and work toward regional stability and global prosperity.

“We are ready to work with India to advance the development of bilateral relations based on mutual respect, equality, and shared interests,” Mao said.

PM Modi’s Optimism on India-China Relations

During his conversation with Lex Fridman, PM Modi expressed optimism about India-China ties, noting that normalcy had returned to the India-China border after his recent discussions with President Xi. Modi reflected on the historical and cultural ties that have connected India and China for over two millennia.

“India and China once contributed over 50 per cent of the global GDP. Our cooperation is not only mutually beneficial but essential for global peace and prosperity,” PM Modi remarked. He emphasized that differences between neighbors are natural but should be managed through dialogue rather than turning into disputes.

China’s Strategic Focus on Cooperation

China’s positive response to Modi’s remarks signals a strategic shift toward fostering cooperation and managing differences with India. Analysts believe that both nations recognize the importance of maintaining regional stability and avoiding further escalation along the contested border regions.

Potential Benefits of Strengthened Ties

Mao underscored that stronger ties between India and China would bring mutual benefits and greater prosperity to both nations. She reiterated that a stable and cooperative relationship between the two powers would strengthen the Global South and contribute to global peace.

“Our shared vision is to enhance trust, strengthen dialogue, and address our differences constructively. This approach benefits the people of both nations and ensures long-term stability in the region,” Mao remarked.

Progress in Bilateral Cooperation

Over the past few months, India and China have made significant progress in diplomatic engagements and border stability following the tensions that arose in the Galwan Valley in 2020. Diplomatic efforts, including high-level military and political talks, have helped de-escalate tensions and establish confidence-building measures along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Conclusion: A New Chapter in India-China Relations

As both India and China signal a positive shift toward greater cooperation and dialogue, PM Modi’s remarks and China’s warm response suggest that bilateral ties are entering a new phase of stability and progress. While challenges remain, the emphasis on dialogue, mutual respect, and strategic cooperation provides hope for enhanced engagement between the two nations in the years ahead.
