Jairam Ramesh equates current situation with an “undeclared emergency”, slamming governance and policies.
As the Modi government completed 11 years in office on May 26, 2025, the Congress launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central administration, branding the period as a time of "undeclared emergency" and alleging that the promise of 'Achche Din' has become a "nightmare" for the people of India.
Kharge Highlights Widespread Discontent Across Citizens
In a detailed post in Hindi on X (formerly Twitter), Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reflected on the journey of the Modi government since it came to power on May 26, 2014. He claimed that every demographic group among India’s 140 crore population had been negatively impacted by the policies and inaction of the Modi administration.
“In 11 years, by turning big 'promises' into 'empty claims', the Modi government has ruined the country,” wrote Kharge.
He systematically addressed how different sections of society had suffered:
-
Youth: "Promise of 2 crore jobs annually" has resulted in a severe employment crisis. According to Kharge, crores of jobs have disappeared rather than been created.
-
Farmers: Promised to double their income, instead they faced state violence during protests including rubber bullets and policy neglect.
-
Women: While reservation was promised, it came with conditions, and women’s safety remains highly compromised.
-
Marginalised groups: There’s been a rise in atrocities against SCs, STs, OBCs, and minorities, with Kharge alleging their fair share of opportunities has vanished.
Economic Criticism: Jobs, Inflation, and Inequality
Kharge further claimed that the economy under the Modi regime is struggling:
-
Inflation is soaring, burdening the middle class and the poor.
-
Unemployment is rampant, contradicting the optimistic employment goals the BJP set over the years.
-
Consumer spending is at a standstill, an indicator of the worsening demand cycle in the economy.
-
Make in India, one of the Modi government’s flagship programmes, is termed a “flop” by the Congress.
-
He also raised alarm over the rising income and wealth inequality, with the rich getting richer and the poor left behind.
Foreign Policy and Institutional Breakdown
The Congress president accused the Modi government of having a failed foreign policy. He referred to the dream of India becoming a ‘Vishwaguru’ (global leader) as being far from achieved. Instead, Kharge alleged that India’s diplomatic relations have worsened under the current government.
Kharge also spoke on the state of Indian democracy, accusing the RSS of controlling democratic institutions, while enforcement agencies like the ED (Enforcement Directorate) and CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) are being misused for political vendetta.
“Autonomy of institutions has been compromised, and democracy is under threat,” said Kharge.
Jairam Ramesh Calls It 'Undeclared Emergency @11'
In support of Kharge's accusations, Congress general secretary and communications in-charge Jairam Ramesh posted on X, saying:
“Today is May 26, 2025. Today is Undeclared Emergency @ 11.”
He referred to the anniversary of Narendra Modi’s first oath ceremony on May 26, 2014, and indirectly drew a parallel between the current political climate and the Emergency era of the 1970s, widely criticised for its suppression of civil liberties and press freedom.
Modi 3.0 Begins Amid Opposition Protests
It is worth noting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi took oath for a third term on June 9, 2024. His government has continued to highlight flagship programmes, conduct mass outreach, and mobilise public support.
However, the Congress party's sharp critique on the 11th anniversary of Modi’s leadership serves as a reminder of the increasing polarisation in Indian politics. The opposition appears to be intensifying its strategy ahead of future elections, possibly aiming to corner the BJP on issues such as unemployment, women’s rights, and economic disparity.
What This Means Politically
This public statement by Congress is not just a reflection of past criticism—it sets the tone for a more aggressive opposition stance moving forward. The Congress leadership appears to be laying the groundwork for an issue-based campaign focusing on:
-
Youth disillusionment
-
Farmer grievances
-
Deteriorating economic indicators
-
Women’s safety and empowerment
-
Institutional independence
-
India’s global standing
Whether these allegations resonate with the electorate will depend on how effectively Congress can amplify these issues, and how the Modi government responds or counters them through policy initiatives and communication.
