The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday, June 23, 2025, claimed that Dalits have been truly empowered under the NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while accusing the Congress of misusing the name of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar for political purposes without genuinely honoring his ideals or vision.
Speaking after the State Executive meeting of the BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha at the party’s headquarters, Bhola Singh, MP and national general secretary of the SC Morcha, said BJP activists were actively taking the Centre’s welfare schemes to the grassroots across India, helping uplift the underprivileged.
‘Congress Failed the Poor’
Mr. Singh criticised Congress for failing to alleviate poverty, despite decades of chanting slogans like ‘Garibi Hatao’. “From Jawaharlal Nehru to Rajiv Gandhi, no Congress leader truly worked for the poor,” he said, adding that the NDA had instead expanded healthcare infrastructure and launched key welfare schemes.
“In the last 11 years, the number of medical colleges has substantially increased, directly benefitting underprivileged communities,” Mr. Singh said. He also emphasized that Dalit representation had improved under Mr. Modi, citing appointments of Governors, Deputy CMs, and Cabinet Ministers from the Scheduled Castes.
Panch Teerth and Ambedkar's Legacy
Highlighting Mr. Modi’s commitment to Dr. Ambedkar, Mr. Singh recalled the development of ‘Panch Teerth’ — five sites associated with Dr. Ambedkar’s life and contribution, including his birthplace, education centers, and places of reform.
Mr. Singh also praised the ‘double engine sarkar’ in Andhra Pradesh, stating it was accelerating development in the state, including for marginalised communities.
Dalit Sammelans and Outreach Strategy
D. Purandeswari, BJP State president and MP from Rajamahendravaram, announced that the party will organise ‘Dalit Sammelans’ across colonies to raise awareness about BJP's initiatives and counter misinformation spread by opposition parties.
“The BJP is the only party that has truly honored Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions, not just in words but through action,” she said, referencing Mr. Modi’s visit to Ambedkar’s London residence and the development of Panch Teerth.
She challenged the Congress to enumerate what it had genuinely done for Ambedkar’s vision, calling the party’s record hypocritical.
Rejecting ‘Anti-Dalit’ Allegations
Responding to opposition claims that the BJP was anti-Dalit, Ms. Purandeswari said that Mr. Modi’s vision of ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’ aims for inclusive growth, especially for farmers, women, and youth. She added that the BJP had expanded Dalit welfare, provided top-level representation, and passed pro-people constitutional amendments.
“Despite malicious propaganda, Dalit communities trust the BJP and Mr. Modi’s leadership, as evident in our consistent outreach and representation,” she said.
Tribute to Party Icons and Public Engagement
At the executive meeting, the BJP decided to:
-
Pay tribute to Shyama Prasad Mukherjee on June 23, observed by the party as Balidan Diwas.
-
Launch a plantation drive to mark the imposition of Emergency, encouraging citizens to plant a sapling in their mother’s name.
Ms. Purandeswari also expressed pride in Andhra Pradesh setting two Guinness records on International Yoga Day, calling it a moment of glory for the state.
Participants and Conclusion
The meeting was chaired by Gudise Devanand, SC Morcha State president, and attended by several key leaders, including national secretaries S. Kumar and P.S. Ashok, State general secretaries B. Sivannarayana and P. Nagabhushanam, and former MLA D. Sambayya.
The BJP reaffirmed its commitment to empowering Dalits, honouring Ambedkar’s ideology, and ensuring inclusive governance, while positioning itself as the true torchbearer of social justice and reform in India.
