What's covered under the Article:

  • Delhi’s IGI Airport saw 13 flights diverted due to heavy rain and thunderstorms disrupting flight operations.

  • Airlines like IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet issued advisories urging passengers to check flight status amid weather impact.

  • IMD forecasts a low-pressure area forming over Arabian Sea, warning of rough seas and potential intensification into a depression.

The Delhi-NCR region witnessed significant weather disturbances on Wednesday, marked by heavy rains, thunderstorms, and hailstorms, resulting in considerable disruptions at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. At least 13 flights scheduled to land or depart from Delhi had to be diverted — with 12 flights rerouted to Jaipur and one international flight sent to Mumbai due to the inclement weather conditions sweeping across the national capital and surrounding areas.

Delhi airport operator Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) officially issued an advisory warning passengers that flight operations might be impacted due to the severe weather conditions, including thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The advisory urged travelers to maintain close communication with their airlines for the latest updates, highlighting the potential for delays and cancellations.

Major airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet, swiftly responded to the situation by issuing public advisories. Air India’s official communication on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) indicated that flights to and from Delhi may face disruptions. Similarly, SpiceJet cautioned passengers about the possibility of delayed or canceled flights, also warning about traffic congestion caused by waterlogging and slow-moving vehicles en route to the airport. IndiGo echoed these concerns, advising passengers to check flight statuses on their official websites or apps and to allow extra travel time due to the weather-induced road conditions affecting the Delhi, Chandigarh, and Kolkata regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) confirmed the arrival of a dense cloud mass over North Delhi, which moved south-southeastwards, triggering a sudden dust storm accompanied by strong gusty winds. Wind speeds were recorded between 50-60 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 70 kmph. These conditions brought welcome respite from the recent heatwave but also caused widespread disruption.

The weather event was not just limited to Delhi-NCR. Heavy rains combined with hailstorms battered several parts of the region, forcing cancellations, flight rerouting, and travel delays.

Adding to the complex weather scenario, the IMD forecasted the formation of a low-pressure area over the East Central Arabian Sea, off the coasts of North Karnataka and Goa, within the next 12 hours. This system is expected to move northwards and intensify into a depression within the following 36 hours, raising concerns over rough sea conditions along the western coast. Consequently, fishermen and coastal communities have been warned to exercise caution and heed official advisories.

The ongoing weather disruptions highlight the vulnerability of air travel and daily commutes to sudden climatic changes, underscoring the need for passengers to stay informed and plan accordingly during this monsoon season.

Passengers traveling to or from Delhi IGI airport are strongly advised to keep track of real-time updates from their respective airlines and allot extra time for airport commutes given the possibility of traffic snarls due to localized waterlogging. Airports and airlines continue to coordinate to ensure passenger safety and minimize inconvenience amid these challenging weather conditions.
