In an early morning incident on Monday, June 23, 2025, a fire broke out on the set of the popular television serial Anupamaa in Mumbai’s Film City, located in Goregaon (East). The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) confirmed that no casualties have been reported as of now.
The blaze was reported around 6:10 AM from the tent area of the Annapurna set, situated behind the Marathi Bigg Boss set at Dadasaheb Phalke Chitranagari, a major television and film production hub in the city.
According to a civic official, the fire brigade was immediately alerted, and four fire engines along with four jumbo water tankers were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, an Assistant Divisional Fire Officer and three Station Officers have been deployed to monitor and contain the fire.
The cause of the fire remains unknown at this stage, and fire-fighting operations are still underway. The production team of Anupamaa, which stars Rupali Ganguly in the lead role, is said to have been evacuated promptly, ensuring no harm to the cast or crew.
The fire reportedly started in a temporary tent structure, commonly used as makeshift studios or break areas on television sets. These structures are typically made of highly flammable materials, raising concerns about safety protocols in one of India's busiest television production zones.
While the blaze has been largely contained, visuals from the site show plumes of smoke rising from the charred sections of the set. The BMC’s fire brigade continues to inspect the site, ensuring no residual hotspots are left to reignite the fire.
This incident has drawn attention to the urgent need for stringent fire safety norms in television production locations, many of which operate under tight budgets and daily shoot deadlines. Sets with heavy lighting, electrical equipment, and fabric backdrops are vulnerable to such mishaps if safety checks are not regularly enforced.
Local residents and bystanders in Goregaon (East) reported seeing emergency vehicles rushing towards the Film City compound early in the morning. While routine shooting was scheduled for Anupamaa, it is now temporarily halted pending safety clearance.
The television industry, which has experienced similar incidents in the past—including fires on the sets of serials like Yeh Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai and Balika Vadhu—may now face renewed scrutiny from regulatory bodies to ensure better fire prevention measures.
As of now, the production team has not issued an official statement. Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inspection to determine the source and cause of the fire, and whether there was any negligence in adhering to fire safety protocols.
The BMC is also likely to file a preliminary report by evening today. More updates are expected as investigations progress.
