What’s covered under the Article:

  1. Indian Air Force launched four precision missile strikes, destroying key Pakistani military airbases and infrastructure during Operation Sindoor.

  2. The S-400 air defence system played a pivotal role, neutralizing multiple Pakistani threats including an airborne early warning system deep inside Pakistan.

  3. Pakistan’s losses, including fighter jets and air defence systems, pushed it to request US mediation for a ceasefire following intense military retaliation.

In a decisive military operation dubbed Operation Sindoor, the Indian Air Force (IAF) launched a series of precision strikes on Pakistani military infrastructure in early May 2025, significantly degrading Pakistan’s air command capabilities and forcing Pakistan to seek a ceasefire through US mediation.

Overview of Operation Sindoor

The operation was initiated by India to dismantle terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Following Pakistan’s retaliatory strikes targeting Indian military and civilian locations, the Indian Armed Forces responded with overwhelming force, inflicting substantial damage on Pakistani military assets.

According to a detailed report by the Hindustan Times, India successfully curtailed Pakistan’s Operation Bunyan al-Marsoos, which had threatened to destroy Indian airbases within 48 hours starting May 10 at 1:00 am. The swift Indian response effectively neutralized Pakistan’s offensive within eight hours.

Four Precision Missile Strikes

On the night of May 10, the IAF launched four air-launched missile strikes with lethal precision. The first strike employed SCALP missiles launched from Rafale jets and BrahMos missiles launched from SU-30 MKI aircraft, targeting and destroying the northern air command-control network based at Nur Khan airbase in Chaklala. This strike was critical in disrupting Pakistan’s command and control operations.

Subsequent strikes targeted strategic Pakistani airbases including Jacobabad and Bholari, delivering a crushing blow to Pakistan’s aerial military capabilities. These strikes collectively dismantled Pakistan’s northern air defenses and effectively ended their planned offensive.

Role of the S-400 Air Defence System

A key game changer during Operation Sindoor was the deployment of India’s Russian-made S-400 air defence system at the Adampur base. The S-400 actively engaged Pakistani threats approximately 11 times during the operation. Notably, it successfully destroyed a Pakistani SAAB-2000 airborne early warning system located nearly 300 km inside Pakistani territory, blunting their surveillance and early-warning capabilities.

Pakistani Aircraft and Defence Losses

The Indian Air Force reportedly has concrete evidence of significant damage inflicted on Pakistani aircraft, including a C-130 J medium lift aircraft, a JF-17 fighter jet, and two F-16 fighters. These losses further weakened Pakistan’s air power.

Additionally, Pakistan lost critical Chinese-supplied air defence systems in the conflict. A HARPY kamikaze drone strike by India destroyed a Chinese LY-80 air defence system near Lahore, while the HQ-9 system, a Chinese analogue of Russia’s S-300, was also taken out near Karachi.

Indian Navy on Alert

The Indian Navy remained on high alert during Operation Sindoor, positioning its vessels approximately 260 miles off the Makaran Coast. Despite threats from Pakistan’s DGMO to retaliate if Indian BrahMos missiles targeted the port, Indian military and political leadership maintained their stance, reflecting confidence in the operation’s success.

Pakistan’s Request for Ceasefire

The cumulative impact of the missile strikes, aerial dominance, and strategic losses compelled Pakistan to seek a ceasefire, reportedly appealing to the United States for mediation. The operation’s success not only forced a halt to Pakistan’s military activities but also reinforced India’s strategic deterrence in the region.

Conclusion

Operation Sindoor stands out as a clear demonstration of India’s enhanced military capabilities, particularly the precision strike capacity of the IAF and the effectiveness of advanced air defence systems like the S-400. The swift and targeted strikes disrupted Pakistan’s military infrastructure and command systems decisively, changing the conflict’s dynamics and compelling Pakistan to request an international ceasefire.

This operation highlights the evolving security scenario in South Asia and underscores the strategic advantages India holds in air power and missile technology, reinforcing India’s position in regional defense and deterrence.
