An all-party Indian delegation, led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, arrived in Georgetown, Guyana, where they were warmly welcomed by the Indian diaspora. The delegation recently met the Vice-President of Guyana, Bharrat Jagdeo, in a meeting described by Tharoor as "phenomenal," reflecting a strong mutual understanding and support for India’s position on terrorism and regional security.

During the meeting, Vice-President Jagdeo was commended by the Indian delegation for showing a "tremendous amount of understanding" towards India's concerns about the ongoing terrorism challenges posed by Pakistan. Shashi Tharoor stated that the discussion was not only focused on counter-terrorism but also touched on Guyana's development prospects and India's potential role in supporting those ambitions, highlighting the growing bilateral relationship.

As part of the visit, Tharoor extended early congratulations to Guyana for its upcoming Independence Day celebrations, emphasizing the spirit of friendship between the two nations.

India’s Clear Message on Terrorism

Tharoor reiterated India’s firm stance against terrorism:

"We have to stand against terrorism wherever it comes. We have to not only bring the evil killers to justice, but we must also seriously challenge those who are financing them, training them, equipping them, directing them to do their evil."

This message resonates strongly with the Indian diaspora in Guyana, who greeted the delegation with loud applause and strong support. Many community members expressed their condolences and solidarity with India, particularly praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s resolute approach to confronting terrorism emanating from Pakistan.

Support from the Indian Diaspora

Speaking to ANI, a member of the Indian community in Guyana said:

"We all in Guyana condemn this terrorism and we are all with the citizens of India ... our condolences are with them and we support each and every movement of the Prime Minister Modi for his fierce approach to this particular act of terrorism done by Pakistan."

Delegation Composition and Objectives

The all-party delegation, besides Shashi Tharoor, includes representatives from multiple political parties across India, such as Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayagi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Tejaswi Surya, Bhubaneswar K Lata (BJP), Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), and Former Indian Ambassador to the US, Taranjit Singh Sandhu.

Their mission is to project a unified national consensus on combating terrorism to international partners and the global community. The delegation is tasked with briefing foreign governments and influential stakeholders about India's strong and decisive measures to counter terrorism, emphasizing the zero-tolerance policy.

Context: Recent Terror Attacks and Operation Sindoor

This diplomatic outreach follows the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, where terrorists sponsored by Pakistan killed 26 innocent civilians. In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, a decisive military action aimed at targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

This operation resulted in the elimination of over 100 terrorists linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen, significantly disrupting terror networks operating against India.

Strengthening India-Guyana Ties

The meeting with Vice-President Jagdeo also laid the groundwork for expanding India-Guyana bilateral cooperation, especially in development sectors. Both leaders discussed potential areas where India’s expertise and investment could contribute to Guyana’s growth story.

The visit highlights India's broader strategy to solidify ties with friendly nations while rallying global support for its fight against cross-border terrorism.

Conclusion

The all-party delegation’s successful interaction with Guyana’s leadership and the enthusiastic support from the Indian diaspora underscore India’s commitment to combating terrorism on multiple fronts. It also signals the strengthening of diplomatic ties with countries that understand and support India’s security concerns.

Through continued international dialogue and domestic resilience, India aims to ensure peace and stability in the region while fostering stronger partnerships worldwide.
