  • Parvathaneni Harish demands Pakistan vacate occupied territory.

  • India advocates UN peacekeeping reforms and women’s participation.

India strongly rejected Pakistan's repeated references to Jammu and Kashmir during a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) debate on peacekeeping reforms, reaffirming that the region “was, is, and will always be an integral part of India.” India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Parvathaneni Harish, firmly condemned Pakistan’s “unwarranted and irrelevant” remarks that attempted to divert the discussion on peacekeeping reforms by bringing up the Kashmir issue.

India Demands Pakistan to Vacate Occupied Territory

In his address, Harish criticised Pakistan for making baseless claims about Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting that these references neither validate Pakistan’s illegal claims nor justify its state-sponsored cross-border terrorism. He pointed out that Pakistan continues to illegally occupy parts of Jammu and Kashmir and demanded that the country vacate the occupied territory immediately.

Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and will remain so. Pakistan’s illegal occupation of certain territories must be vacated, and its attempts to mislead the international community through false narratives are unacceptable,” Harish stated unequivocally.

Harish emphasized that India’s sovereignty is non-negotiable and that no forum, including the UN, would be allowed to question it. He warned Pakistan to refrain from using international platforms for its “parochial and divisive agenda” that distracts from core global issues like peacekeeping reforms.

Pakistan’s Attempt to Raise Kashmir at UN Backfires

The issue arose when Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Pakistani Prime Minister, attempted to raise the Jammu and Kashmir issue during the UN Security Council discussion on peacekeeping reforms. In response, Harish firmly reiterated India’s position, emphasizing that Pakistan’s occupation of parts of Jammu and Kashmir remains a violation of international law and that such comments were unrelated to the agenda under discussion.

Pakistan’s insistence on bringing up Kashmir at every international forum is a deliberate attempt to distract the global community from its own domestic challenges and continued sponsorship of terrorism across borders,” Harish remarked.

India’s Advocacy for UN Peacekeeping Reforms

While addressing the Security Council, India used the opportunity to advocate for adapting UN peacekeeping missions to address modern challenges. Harish highlighted that new-age threats such as terrorism by non-state actors and advancements in weaponry necessitate changes in how peacekeeping mandates are defined and executed.

India called for:

  • Enhanced focus on modern threats: Ensuring that peacekeeping missions are equipped to tackle threats from non-state actors and emerging technologies.

  • Greater role for troop-contributing countries: Emphasizing the need for countries contributing troops and police to have a stronger role in shaping mandates.

  • Adequate funding and resources: Advocating for sufficient financial resources to meet the operational needs of peacekeeping missions.

Peacekeeping mandates should be designed to address evolving challenges and ensure that peacekeepers are adequately equipped to handle complex situations on the ground,” Harish emphasized.

India’s Commitment to Women in Peacekeeping

Harish also underscored India’s commitment to promoting gender balance in peacekeeping missions, highlighting India’s recent efforts, including:

  • Organizing the first-ever Conference for Women Peacekeepers from the Global South to encourage broader participation of women in peacekeeping efforts.

  • Advocating for greater inclusion of women in peacekeeping operations to ensure diverse perspectives in conflict resolution.

India’s commitment to gender balance in peacekeeping is unwavering. Our efforts to empower women peacekeepers and strengthen their role globally reflect our belief in inclusive security,” Harish said.

India Pushes for Security Council Reforms

India also reiterated its long-standing demand for comprehensive reforms in the UN Security Council (UNSC) to ensure that the body becomes more reflective of global realities. Harish pointed out that the current structure, established decades ago, does not reflect the geopolitical shifts that have taken place over the years.

The Security Council must evolve to better represent the developing world and emerging powers. Reform is essential to maintain its legitimacy and effectiveness in addressing contemporary global challenges,” he added.

India’s Firm Stance on Jammu and Kashmir

This incident underscores India’s unwavering stance on Jammu and Kashmir, reaffirming its sovereignty and territorial integrity. India has consistently maintained that the region is an integral part of the country and that Pakistan’s occupation of certain territories is illegal and untenable under international law.

Harish reiterated India’s desire for peaceful and terror-free engagement with Pakistan but stressed that any dialogue could only occur if Pakistan ceases its support for cross-border terrorism and vacates illegally occupied territories.

Harish Slams Pakistan’s Double Standards

Harish did not shy away from pointing out Pakistan’s double standards in addressing international issues. While Pakistan claims to advocate for peace, it continues to harbour and sponsor terror outfits that destabilize the region.

Pakistan’s actions speak louder than words. Its continued sponsorship of terrorism and destabilizing activities is a matter of grave concern for the international community. India remains firm in its resolve to protect its sovereignty and security,” Harish stated firmly.

Global Response to India’s Stand

India’s stance at the United Nations Security Council has garnered wide support from the international community, with many nations recognizing India’s legitimate concerns over cross-border terrorism and Pakistan’s misuse of international platforms for its domestic political agenda.

India’s Message: No Compromise on Sovereignty

India’s strong and unequivocal response sends a clear message to Pakistan and the global community: India’s sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir is non-negotiable, and any attempts to question it will be met with firm opposition.

As India continues to push for peacekeeping reforms, gender balance, and a more reflective Security Council, it remains steadfast in defending its territorial integrity and promoting global peace and security.
